Alright I have a question I recently lost my second gear in my 56 customline, I still have the factory 223ci with the 3 speed manual transmission. And I'm looking to replace my transmission 2 things.

    1) what years of fords would work for the transmission?

    2) I was told by by someone the the transmissions in the inline 6s are the same as the V8s but I'm not sure if that's true with that being said can any be able to confirm that for me? Reason why I'm asking as I post an ad and I have been getting calls but they are all V8 transmissions.

(Before anyone says why don't I go V8. Well I got that part covers as I have another frame that has the engine mounts in it and I want to put the car on air ride so I figured I can build that frame to what I want and still be able to drive my 56 till that frame is ready and I get both the joy of driving it and building it as the same time)

Why not just fix the one you have?

My dads friend that owns a transmission shop told me that it would be a easier and a little bit cheaper for me to get him to just change it rather then him rebuilding it.

  4. They should all be interchangeable. They all used a 10 spline input, IIRC there's two different output spline counts, but if they can furnish a matching driveshaft yoke that fits the trans you're good to go.

First of all, the 272/292 V8 and Six trannies were identical except for a differential gear ratio....achieved with a different input gear and cluster gear. Same thing applies to the overdrive transmissions for these cars. Aside from a slight loss of low end torque, the V8 version is fine to use.

The standard 3 speed trans is the Ford side loader (9 bolt side cover). The OD trans in 1956 was the Borg Warner T86 which was a toploader (6 bolt cover).

If you had the 312 V8 your car would have had the Borg T85 heavy duty 3 speed but that doesn't apply in your case. This trans would not be a suitable swap to your six.

Your trans is can most definitely be rebuilt. Another used trans just means you'd be pulling that one out soon for a rebuild. Find a shop who knows old Ford 3 speeds.....not someone who simply doesn't want to be bothered.
