It's a little off topic but relevant since I need both of these to move to the next step on my drag roadster project and I'm out of contacts to call. First I need to cut a 2'x4'x3/4" steel slab so I can recess it into my new fab table. 2 sides were nicely sheared at the factory and 2 sides were poorly flame cut. I could spend all day with the grinder and still not get it straightened out since it is off by about an inch! I squared the 2 remaining sides and then ran a line of masking tape, then spray painted it, removed the tape and now i have a nice very crisp line on where i wanted to make the 2 cuts. I started nibbling at with with the chop saw but burnt up the motor after 9" because it didn't have a thermal overload on the motor. Wasn't even really pushing on the saw, was going real easy because I was afraid it might happen and was taking breaks, but not surprised it was a HF piece of crap that rattled like a SOB anyways. Called the only 2 steel distributors I know and they don have a shear that big. Second I need a spring perch pressed out of a model A axle, wont come out by "wicking", soaking, heat, etc, but didn't really want to beat on it becuase I didnt want to mushroom this one. The last two axles I mushroomed them and then ended up drilling the centers out and then burning out the remainder and do NOT want to do this again. I went around to 4 different general shops and no one wants to touch it. Anyone in Cecil / Harford / Baltimore counties that can do this stuff?
CS, Regarding the spring perch. Get the axle/area around the perch "Cherry Red" and the perch will come out. Heating it...real heat gets rid of all the rust and junk that has hold of it. It has never failed to come out in one piece..Good Luck Murph
Hey, Chicken Scratch call: Coffee Hill Welding 27410 Budds Creek Rd Mechanicsville, MD 20659 (301) 884-6075 Ask for Kenny Welch tell him Dan in Woodbridge sent you. I am sure he has a large enough shear for your project.
Have you checked with Moxleys welding in Street Md? At route 1 and 136 just across the dam in Harford county.
Hey scratch, nice running into to you the other night. You might Metal Express in rosedale for the shearing part. If you want, you could bring it by my place down in the city and see if 3 minds might get the piece out of the axle. Can't guarantee we could do it but you never know. I'm dropping you a PM with my cell number. John
Take a short drive up 95 to Steel Metal Liquidators on Airport Rd, in Wilmington. Right off of 141. You can see if from 95 where the split is.
I tried Moxley's and Metal Express, they can only shear up to 1/4". I live in Cecil so Delaware isn't that far either. Let me make some phone calls to the other ones listed next.
