For the first time in a long time I need to buy a new carb. Any recommendations, or ones to steer clear of? Looking for a 600 cfm, holley, edelbrock or summit. This isn't about which is better for the application, I've run them all, but rather a quality of manufacturing question, as all the new ones I've looked at in the last couple years seem to be much lighter metal than I'm used to and look and feel cheap. Yes I am out of touch with modern manufacturing.

I've never once had any issues in the manufacture quality of Holley/Edelbrock 4 barrel carbs.

I prefer Holley myself, for tunability.

Check Holleys web site for rebuilt carburetors. Lot cheaper then new ones.

Holley, or Quick Fuel. Just my 2 cents.

You won't hear this from many guys but consider an Autolite now remade by Summit Racing. For the most part very good reviews and more trouble free out of the box than most aftermarket. Remember to put in an additive to combat the ethanol in the gas to save headaches farther down the road. GoodLuck.

  6. I was going to say the same thing here ^^^^^

I am not an edelbrock guy but either is a good choice.

I run Holleys but have experience with Carters and Eddies , for some reason I have problems with Eddies getting contaminated and I don't have that problem using A Holley. My old 72 3/4 ton I put a Carter on it and loved it. Good mpg and just a small needle change and it was perfect for the old Chevy . We got so tired of the contamination problem on my sons 70 El Camino we put one of my old Holleys on and never looked back. Even ran the same filtering system. I don't know anyone that suffered this problem ..
I tried another Eddie on a 69 Mustang I had, that car had a new tank lines and 2 filters, one before the pump and one after and about twice a year I had to strip it down because of poor running. So I guess I'll have to live with a little worse economy but better tune ability of my much loved Holleys

Be aware that some of the newer holley 600's do not have externally adjustable floats.

What this will turn into is Holley vs Edelbrock, with a few supporters of Quadrajets thrown in for good measure......it always goes that way. :) Bottom line, they are all good in their own way and none are perfect.

My opinion is that Edelbrocks are a little better on the street and Holleys are stronger in the performance category, but what do I know, that is simply what I buy and like.

I have steered a few friends to a company where I buy remanufactured Edelbrocks, All American Carburetor here in Florida. The carb they sell looks absolutely brand new and performs like new, but they cost right around $ 220. Over the years we have probably bought a dozen from them and never had an issue. They also have Holleys and Rochesters too.

Just passing that along in case you want one and want to save some money.

I also sent the 750 Holley DP for my drag motor to All American to redo, and it came back looking like new.

I'm with Jimmysix on the Autolite carb choice. Won't perform as good as a Holley but you can't beat the trouble-free reliability of one.

Re manufactured edelbrock are a good deal, bought a few, never an issue.

Not to side line too much, but how is the quality of summit carbs, never seen 1 in person, don't need a new carb at the moment to buy one.

I'll try to turn it into a new vs old debate...why do you need a NEW carburetor?

Try quick fuel. My engine shop recommends it. I run a rebuilt afb in my truck but am able to get recreational fuel for it (no ethanol).

Models 916, how did yours come out of the box. I have heard a lot of horror stories on the demon products, but am interested in the 1901 street demon, if anyone else has bought one, did it work out of the box?
Squirrel, the reason I need a new carb is more time and location, than anything else. I am just not set up to do what I need to with what I have, and my parts stash and many of my tools are 200 miles away. I have the money right now,, and just need to buy something to bolt on and go, most likely a Holley 1850 with adjustable floats.

  19. I've been eyeballing those myself... Very good reviews, all of the good features of a Holley without the Holley shortcomings, uses standard Holley jets and float valves, and comes with annular-discharge boosters standard (a big-dollar add-on for a Holley). Nice price too....
