there should be a HAMB mag.....only sold to hambers...all profits go to Ryan....

There are more than enough kick *** photographers, layout artists, graphic designers, illustrators, you name it on here....not to mention some of the smartest people as far as tech goes......people on here are from all over the country and world we could cover every major event and the not so major events with ease.....I think with a little help from everyone we could make a kick *** magazine.....

All cars, tech, maybe art....with NO ads or only hamber's ads

just a thought.....I know it takes a lot of work to throw a mag together....

  4. I used to be a magazine junkie, Ever since I found the HAMB I don't need the magazines.
Show coverage...you get it the next day instead of 3 months later.
Car pics...If you want to see more pics, all you have to do is ask.
Tech..again if you don't understand just ask and you'll get an explanation.
Soap operas...If that's your thing there's plenty of that to go around too
I'm a recovering magazine junkie. Thanks to the HAMB!!

Not a bad idea, but, the problem with mags as I see it is, once you get an issue out you get to take a breath or two and it's right back into the trenches.

Mags are like TV in that they absolutely consume entertainment. Entertainment defined as on-screen or the written word.

Aside from the money factor - start up costs are huge - once an issue or two is out, it has to be tough to come up with another fresh set of ideas. Which is, I think the big reason for new mag failures.

There's been a few guys on the board here who have started mags and most of them are not in existence right now.
More than likely they could tell us a tale or two about the mag biz.

ive heard that argument before...truth is pretty girls and cars have went together from the start, look at old hotrods and others the ameriacan car mags have only become sterile in the past5-10 years or so........

i have to admit i wouldnt have spent as much lunch money on the american rodders that i did had they not had the eye candy they did, guess that makes me not a real rodder.....plus i like my girls with little to no ink and a little less on the *****y side, your right some of the ones in ck and old rodz id rather not see at all

anyway i hear people *****in about imports ect. if you want to hook some new blood in to this ,you have to get them young, and there has to be at least one good mag on the news stand for them to get their intrest sparked...the girls were a hook what i found inside is what really started the sickness,

had it been as ****ty as the mags out there now i probely would have bought *******(if i could have got it ,with that bottle of old harper [IMG]) and probely be buildin tuner right now, and tons of money in the bank insted of rusty old ford parts!!

as far as material ive seen lots of back issues of ameriacn rodder i would say they had a good run from the late 80s to the late 90s early 00 but then t-buckets and other **** started being featured, and now that one with the rest have become a usless waste of trees , and the papers to damn glossy to even use in the outhouse....if a magizine had another 10 year good run i would appreciate that

i guess im old fashioned id rather read, you get cross eyed looking at the computer all the time..

hey clark if the hamb solved your magazine addiction..what will solve the hamb addiction?

I think the last thing this industry needs is another magazine... So many little publications and big publications and... I can't keep up. All I need:

    1. Custom Rodder for my custom fix
    2. Hop Up for my real hot rod, do it like this, fix
    3. Rodder's Journal for my "If I were rich" fix
    4. Garage Magazine for my art/scene fix

As far as show coverage and tech articles, the HAMB can not be competed with by anything in print.

Alot of work to put a magazine together?

Ha Ha...understatement of the year!!! [IMG] [IMG]

I once 'threatened' to start up my own car magazine, but I know better...from experience!

I used to do a newsletter...a 'simple', maybe five page NEWSLETTER every month for a band's fan club (national act, and an unofficial fan club). I did the whole thing myself...from writing, to artwork, to research, layout, printing and distribution. The circulation wasn't huge at all...like maybe a hundred readers at the peak of it, and I even did it for FREE, so nobody would feel ripped off if they didn't like it!

Let me tell you, that leads to serious burnout REAL quick! I'd just finish writing, compiling, printing and shipping ONE edition...then I'd have to start on the NEXT one. If I was lucky, I could take a few days, off, but then I'd have to hustle to get the issue done in time.

It's a thankless, hectic, straining job...and I admire the heck out of guys like RF who do the bulk of a magazine themselves ever month...it sure ain't easy, but if you love it, it's alot of fun, despite the hard work!

(I had to quit doing the newsletter for financial reasons as well as burnout...I couldn't AFFORD to do it for free, and I would have felt bad asking subscribers to pay for it every month...so it just went away quietly!)

It's a great idea...a HAMB Magazine...but we get real-time tech, fun, pictures and stuff here already. [IMG]

I always kinda wanted to work for a magazine...I think it'd be a fun job that I might be good at...but I wouldn't want to do it alone or be the guy responsible for making every aspect come together every month...no way!

I'll SECOND that sentiment, and ADD SHOP RAG, even though Honest seems to have forgotten about the article he asked us about in Dallas! [IMG]
I respect RF's work and decision to feature material that pushes the envelope, with roots still firmly in place...
I see Rodders Journal the way a poor guy sees a beautiful stripper....lotsa eyeballin', but only enough cash for maybe a lapdance and one drink.....but RJ is a work of art everytime.
EXCEPT for the article (press release) where Rat Fink books got jerked off simultaneously....Nason with MY *******ed quotes..AGAIN! [IMG]
    Garage?
    I like the logo....... [IMG]

    I'm working on a MAGAZINE...
GARAGE MAGAZINE I have a FASHION shoot for STONER with a BUSINESS card...

  15. magazine aside (although i think there would be a m***ive subscription for it)i reckon there is still a place for a book or magazine for the art of the hamb. i`m not a publisher so i wouldn`t have a clue, but a pretty cool calender was knocked up....is it that different?a book of that kind with the `names` ***ociated with the hamb could certainly extend to a far wider audience...just an idea
lets face it theres a whole world out there that hasn`t read the works of germ....i for one think he`s a poet for the `youth` tm. of today

Just got the first issue of "Kustom's Illustrated - A Magazine Devoted To The Traditional Custom Car Built In The 40's - early 60's". It's great !! Loaded with lots of custom car pics in color and a couple of short tech articles. It's in the "little book" format and 50 pages of high quality paper. Published 4x a year by Luke Karosi (not sure, but I think he's a HAMBer and a member of the Road Agents). Excellent read and well worth the $20 for a year's subscription. Hope it makes it, OK.

I think there are enough mags out there to choke a horse already. If you can't find one that suits your every need, then youre normal. No magazine will ever do that for everyone. Hop Up comes damn close enough for me though.. [IMG]

On a serious note, what does one have to do to get a mag sold locally? The closest place to me from Little Rock that carries CKD, Hop Up or Garage is Memphis. How do you go about getting these mags sold at say Books-A-Million or Barnes? I know they would sell since they have sold every damn copy of OSR. [IMG]

No one misses the old American Rodder more than I do. I've never enjoyed working as much as I did during the nine-plus years I wrote for AR. Three or four car features, a couple of tech/how-to pieces, maybe an event story or better yet a personality profile, plus a monthly column in which I could talk about whatever caught my attention at the time -- now that was fun, and a job that is sorely missed.

It just may be that a magazine like AR is no longer viable. It was closer to what can be found on the internet today than it was to the magazines with which it competed.

Oh, well, asi es la vida.

Over in cold and ****ty mother England we get ONE magazine that is specifically aimed at rods, and it is called Custom Car, believe it or not. There are a couple dozen or more aimed at metric cars, pickups, bikes, choppers, etc, but only the one for real cars. Kinda sad too, when you hardly ever see it in the magazine stores. I know of only one store in my whole town that sells it, so I subscribe.
A dieing industry rods are in the UK, or so it would seem from the mag sales [IMG] [IMG]

The HAMB is better than ANY magazine, better than most magazines ever thought of being.

The only one that ever came close was Iron Horse Magazine, when Fritz was still there.
    I still miss David Snow's editorials,and Chopperman.

The only mag I subscribe to is car craft, because I can't get really in depth engine building tech on the HAMB.

Gotta agree, the old American Rodder was the best. I think I've got every issue and reread them on a regular basis. I don't like the way they have resized the new version, what's up with that change. Oh Yea, they can increase the price with the NEW format. If Buckaroo had really wanted to do it RIGHT they should have got the old staff back together and left them alone to put out a REAL magazine.

HAMB is the perfect magazine for us, as long as it doesn't figure out a way to sell out to advertisers and go corporate...just remember to hit "print" when the info you need goes by.
Spend your current magazine budget on oldies--start hunting down those pre-musclcar Hot Rods and R&C and so on, and yes the old AR's and you'll be getting what you want.
