I need a new starter for my 1950 Ford Tudor. I notice that some of the starters for sale are without the drive bendix. Can I use the bendex from the old starter or should I get a starter with the drive included? Also any suggestions on the best place to get this starter? Thanks
You can reuse the old one, but keep in mind that it is a common failure point. If you don't mind pulling it again, go for it. Are you sure that a worn Bendix isn't part of the problem? Not familiar with your starter, but if it's like some of the old Ford tractors I've worked on, the Bendix sticks out about 6 inches and the end of the shaft rides in a bushing in the block. That differs from more common starters that have their drive end bushings in the starter nosecone. If that bushing in the block is worn out that can cause a problem. If your setup is different disregard, but I've found Ol' Henry used a lot of the same parts in his tractors as his cars. Could also be more costly if you buy the starter alone and the Bendix later, especially if you have to pay shipping.
If you are buying a new starter, you might as well get one with a new bendix. And don’t get the modern bendix replacement, I’ve read that they can be troublesome.
Thank you all for your replies. It looks like I need a new starter with the OEM bendix. Does anyone know where I can find a new starter and bendix that is not the modern bendix?
