I'm working my 1940 Chevy truck and want to convert it to four wheel drive. My only delema is which axles should I go with. I'm wishing to keep it a dually and have the capability of using it as a daily driver/work truck. I plan to put a Cummins 4bt under the hood. (I know this post will offend some die hard vehicle enthusiasts but it's something different and it's been a dream passed down from my father to me and I've taken the initiative to get it done.)

  2. Well you had me until Dually. :D

I was going to offer you the entire drive train out of my Willys pickup. :D :D

I'm thinking that you probably want the axles out of a mid 70's GM dualie pickup along with the drive train. It isn't going to be pretty in front because you are going to have tires ending up outside the fenders unless you can figure out how to narrow the front axle. Any narrow axles I know of don't come with 8 lug hubs for that "serious" big truck look. Maybe this will post up before they lock up the thread. I'd be haunting the 4x4 forums to see if anyone is narrowing a big front axle to go under narrow rigs.

The guy on one of the 4X4 shows reworked a GM 14 bolt rear to go under the front of a rock crawler.

Thanks guys . I'm not too worried about having an axles narrowed. Any good machine shop should be able to handle it. (As I don't have the equipment to do it myself) the price of the work just means time spent on body work.

I found that video of the 14 bolt conversion. It looks easy enough. and Im quite familiar with the geared hub and the CV joint and I would say the application they where putting it in would be next to impossible to break it.
