I have a 49 Ford truck that I'm thinking on installing a Camaro front clip into. I know there are some real experts at this on here (special thanks to LUX BLUE for his tech posting on putting a Camaro clip into a Chevy truck). I have a couple of questions pertaining to Camaro clips. Most info here refers to using a 2nd generation Camaro clip. I researched this and found that the last year for 2nd generation Camaro was 1981. I have located a 3rd generation Camaro (83 model). The research I did said the 3rd generation uses the same GM F-body as the 2nd generation, but also said there was some changes in the suspension. Will the 3rd generation Camaro I found work, or should I keep looking for a 2nd generation? If they won't work, why won't it? What's different? Also, has anyone used a Camaro front clip in a Ford F series truck that can tell me if it worked good or what the pros and cons are on this?
1983 and newer Camaro and Firebird use a "unitized" frame construction. You'd have to cut the frame apart to use it in a different car. The front struts pretty much eliminate it's use for a hot rod. 1981 and earlier had a unitized structure from the firewall back, but the "front clip" was much like a regular frame...just shorter. The front clip can be unbolted from the rest of the car complete with all the suspension, steering box, engine, etc...
70's novas are similar. you can even get narrow tube control arms so the wheels can tuck up under the fenders. People also use volare clips, but I hear the dakota is gaining popularity. I think it was elPolacko who did a write up on it.
I appreciate all the info guys. Frame/clip pictures of your '51 would be appreciated if you have them or have the time to take some. (This may be really hard with the engine and tranny already in.) Anyone else have info on this and/or pics, please send it.
