I bought a non-running 54 bel air bout a month ago with a bad 235. only 235 i could find locally (milwaukee,WI) was out of a 57 chevy truck. the motor mounts for 57 is in front of motor & mine are closer to the middle. does anyone know if this swap is possible? V8 swap is possibly in the future, but for now i just want to get to cruisin as quickly as possible. any help is appreciated!!

'55-57 engines are the hardest to swap into '52-54 cars for that very reason. Also, the water pump is also going to be too long.
You can make mounts for the front corners, or I have a prototype set made if you are interested. The water pump issue is best handled by buying an adapter plate that will allow you to reuse the pump and balancer off of your '54 engine. I have those too.
Reuse the '54 flywheel, starter & bellhousing.

Some after 54 motors still have the lip under the timing cover and all you have to do is drill the appropriate holes in that plate and bolt her in. If your waterpump on the 57 is good press off the pulley mount, find a shallower pulley in the junk yard (some ,dare I say it, Ford V8/V6 water pump pulleys work perfectly), cut off the proper amount form the water pump shaft and press your support back on to the right depth and away you go. Happy "mostly" Chevy motoring.

    Sort of.
On '52-54 cars, if you convert them to '49-51 style mounting up front, you will also need to add the stabilizer mounts to the sides of the bellhousing, like the earlier engines had. You will also need to drill holes in the crossmember as they didn't bother to do that after '51.
The shortened pump setup can work, but its about 4" lower on the radiator, and it will not cool as well in traffic. You can buy these already setup, or you can press it yourself. You do not need to remove the hub, just press it down and use a pulley from a long pump SBC. Make sure you support the shaft when pressing, or you will ruin the pump. The long pump SBC pulley will need to have the holes slotted as the pattern is larger. The short pump SBC pulleys are onlt 1/2" shorter than the stock '55-up 235 pulley, which probably isn't enough to do the job. I have also seen pulleys from Ford inline sixes work as well.

I bought a 53 with a 235. Was half way thru engine rebuild. Dude broke cam gear. Had to pull cam. Went to install new cam gear and relized the was a back plate for the timing cover. Not sure how that sob goes on. Cam has retaining plate. Not sure if the cam retainig plate goes on first then timing cover back plate. Or the other way round. I dont know how to intall all this **** i didnt see how it came off. Having trouble need help.
