I am building a two speed transmission out of a Muncie three speed transmission, using second and high, for a nostalgia drag altered. These transmissions are basicaly the same from 55-65 Chevy's, but there are two ratios that I know of 1.53 and 1.68 for the second gear. I thought you could identify these different transmission from the input shaft, strait shaft was V8 trans, tapered shaft for 6 cyl. motor. I opened up each one of these boxes and counted the teeth and they are identical, now I am stumped. Does anybody know the different part numbers, tail shaft lenths , mounting boss applications? Did the trucks also use this box ? Maybe the trucks have a more favorable ratio for what I am doing. Any information would be appreciated.
The best thing to do is put the transmission in low gear, mark the input and output shafts, and count the revolutions. Six cylinder units have a 2.94:1 low, and V8 units had a 2.47:1 low. I believe that trucks used the 2.94:1 trans. The long tail units were used in '55-'57 and '65 full size, and '64-5 Chevelle and '62-'65 Chevy II.
