Rear brakes: Hub question. (Technical) sxdxmike Here is one good thread and there is another in the tech archive about modifing juice plates to work with 32-34 spindles. The model A spindles have the same four bolt pattern. Are you running an A banjo or later? Do you want/have to keep the A spindles?
1940 brakes suck. They are not self energizing nor are they self adjusting. You can do better this forum needs an index since the search does not work well http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=642189
i know 40 brakes are not the best , but i have them . so im going to try . i believe ted has a kit for them as well as the 'a's . yes 'a' banjo & yes i would like to keep it on 'a' spindles .......... thank you both .. steve
With all do respect, really Yes, the 40 juice plates will work with the A spindles. In the rear as shown in the previous link they have to be rotated, new holes drilled so they clear the spring mount.
I've been running 40 brakes on my 27 for lots of years and had them on my 23 for a long time, they stop just fine. The key is to use new parts, set them up well, and keep them maintained. Only time they are not like discs is when they are real wet, but who wants discs on an early stye hot rod? Don
Model 'a' banjo spring mount will get into hyd backing plates, cut out a pocket and they will just fit and the wheel cylinder can bolt up and clear everything - i don't have the shock mount on the top of my spring mount, that ball would screw the pooch for sure. Mine is a '28 model 'a'.
