Yet one more stupid question from the FNG. Couldnt I move the oil pickup back with a longer tube and modify the oil pan by relocating the sump to the rear. I remember now that the front sump pan is the only thing I know about engines. The more I hear the more I think I'll be real different and power this thing with a Briggs and Stratton engine. Compact and cheap on gas. This isn't my only engine swap for this year I'm also gonna do a V-8 Astro swap for my work truck. I create my own headaches.
it's been a while since I've been inside an FE engine, but on Fords generally the oil pump itself requires a front sump....it sticks down pretty far. This is even true on the van and 4x4 pans that have a rear sump, there's still a significant front sump on those pans.
There are a few rear sump pans available for FEs, but they may not be really easy to find. I think 4x4 pickups were the original application, and they aren't really shallow at the front, due to the position of the oil pump. I used one on the 390 in my coupe years ago, and it all went together with factory parts. Since those are truck parts, they may still be available from the local Ford house.
