I have posted something similar to this before but the time is coming for me to start tearing down the pontiac and start the process over again for the 7th time (not on this car, others). Anyways, I need a HAMB opinion. I have an idea of how I am going to do things, but I want input, some creative ideas. The car is a 55 pontiac starchief. It is going to get a new motor, bodywork, paint and interior. I have a deep love of 60's style on 50's cars. Scallops, astros, bellflowers, and METALFLAKE. However, I also like skirts, wide whites, the "50"'s look. whatever. My idea is to do a two tone paint with reverse scallops and a intricate scallop on the roof. DO astros go with wide whites at all? Feel free to photoshop these pix (1st one stolen from fellow hamber)and just give me ideas and opinions. Thanks
If you gotta change it, go ahead, but I like the car as is. I'd keep it in the style you have now, just tidy it up a bit. Maybe re-do the paint, but I wouldn't put any scallops or anything on it. I like the solid two tone. Astros need skinny whites, but I don't think astros' would look good on this car anyway. Just my 2 cents
Your car is ****ing beautiful as it is. In my opinion ( like I know any thing) astros don't look good with wide whites.
True. You're car is good to go, but I understand wanting a change. One thing to watch out for, opinion wise, is alot of so-called black and white "rules". Books that I always love to reference are "Custom Cars from the 1950's" and the subsequent '60's book. For example; Don't think wide whites were used later in the 60's on "cool" cars? In general, No. But check the book, some did exist. Plus, rules were meant to broken anyway, just have to use a little taste when doing so.
Thanks guys. I think that is the problem. I have only seen 2 customized 55's one was Mike Ness' and the other was the HAMB's hellmet. I want to do something different than the norm, but not for the sake of just being different. I love the 60's look like **** reynolds car, just truely amazing. I just have a hard time crossing over that line. Oh well, I was looking for opinions and I got some good ones. Thanks again
If I were you I wouldn't get caught up in the b***-boat flake or other paint crazes. Not that they don't look totally rad - ****'s car is dead on for example - but if executed even slightly off of perfect it could make your ride look foolish. Pontiacs can stand on their own merit, your car is hot, I'd give up a testicle to have that car. And the good thing about your car is that it will only appreciate in value as it sits - not just a little either, that car will be worth its weight in gold someday. I'd try some new tire/wheel combos first - easy photoshop stuff BTW. It can change the whole at***ude of the car. Paint is a lot harder to change and MUCH more expensive. Maybe even tint the windows a little, it might give off that bad-*** Darth Vader look. Other changes? How about skirts and side-pipes? That might be easy and it will yeild a very different feel to the car. I might get a chance to photoshop something for you later, but I am too busy right now. I like this Olds - Choprods maybe? Sure the chop makes it that much cooler, but it isn't necessary to the feel you are going for. The scallops help if thats what you are set on, but check the skirts ans pipes too.
That car will look pretty nice....When it's finished! (Yes, folks this is a joke, can you believe people actually make these remarks to Kustom55 about this car?)
LOL, that was funny deyomatic! Lets just say where I was parked at the Roundup, the people around me were not happy that my "unfinished car" was near their easter basket colored cars. Broman, nice pix and even better ideas. I have been looking at different pix all day and yea, I am starting to agree with what is being said, especially with you about the value as well as the tire factor. I really dont care for the rims on there so maybe I will make subtle changes to get it just right. Thanks again
I played with it a little, but to me she looks best with caps and skirts... 50's style, I guess. Don't even really need scallops or lake pipes - too clean as-is.
I ALSO LOVE 6O'S STYLE. I would not run wide whites, I would run pinner whites with either a steel rim or Astros. I think a mild scallop/panel job would look good and be different on the Pontiac. I happen to like the gawdy clors (browns, golds, etc.) I think color is a very personal thang. FONZI
like the others said, your car is kick*** as it is now. but don't forget that you're supposed to build it for you, not for others.
I'd leave it just the way it is with one possible exception:I'd paint the top black in keeping with the way the factory two-toned the car. That's one beautiful 55! Ray
The lighter color on top (red) does help visually lower the whole car, though. I think some trad pinstriping and skirts rolling on a set of steelies and full 'caps on www's is the ticket. '57 Caddy 'caps! Astros on www's, nah, maybe Radirs on www's. Just swapping around your rolling stock will do wonders for your mood of the day, 50's or 60's.
