OCTANE...NO you don't need to blame others, man how long do you need to run a rebuilt engine to know it's CRASHING. common sense tell's me, or anyone else for thay matter that engine was KNOCKING BIGTIME. i would be surprised if anything of value is left...POP.

Sounds like you ****ed a bolt or debris into your combustion chamber and it inhibited the spin, you could have done all sorts of damage, pull it apart completely check every thing and re***emble it again.

I built a 240Z engine and set it aside while I built the car and two years later it was locked up solid when I tried to start it. #5 cylinder was full of a giant mud dobber nest. It cleaned up OK with just a few rust pits and ran strong until I sold the car.

People just don't believe the mouse nest and critter condo stories.

Looks like sabotage to me, like someone dropped something down the manifold on purpose. If the shop wasn't paying the help (common in businesses going down the ****ter..), someone on the disgruntled side could have done it to get back at the shop owner.

A row of smashed spark plugs is not something to take lightly, you more than likely have some tweaked valves. I agree with taking the whole deal down to the bare components.

  5. when i raced stock cars, and had a valve that hit i just threw them and replaced them, just one more bad part that can cause catrostrophic damage why tempt fate

to me looking at the damage early on looked to be sabatoge with some debries

sure was not a decent engine job, looks like s***med together junk

This is NOT a bolt dropped down the manifold. It got four cylinders worth, on one side and believe me the bolt didn't do it's damage and then run to another cylinder. It does seem as though something was in the manifold, but the odd thing is that it distributed to only one side, and that the motor ran at all with some sort of obstruction.
Did the motor sound healthy and crisp? Or was it laboring and making noise?
The only issue I have with Mud Dabbers (what the hell are those anyway?) or mice is the description of Iron and Plastic in the material found inside.

This motor is way too filthy for having only run for 30 seconds after a fresh rebuild.

Part of this story is missing.

I'd suggest getting a how to rebuild a engine book if you haven't done it before. That engine looks like $hit inside. I've seen better looking engines sitting in junkyards for years. I can see why the shop closed, probaby a good thing. I feel for you.

Thanks for the help here guys. It's been a hell of a learning experience. Tough lessons, but I'll be better for it. I still have no idea what was in the cylinders, but after tearing it down there was only one damaged valve, and after re***embly it sounds strong. Thanks again guys.

As for the comments of it running longer than stated or not being a fresh rebuild...I had a few local guys look at it and the consensus is that the guy I got it from threw some new bearings in an older motor, fly cut the pistons to clear the valves, and put fresh paint on it. The heads had been done, but the short block appears to just have received new bearings.

Good to hear you got it going again.

Now that you have it going you can always be on the hunt for another cheap SBF.
I always seem to find what I'm looking for when I don't need it any more;)

Glad you got it up and running.. nothing like taking the word of a "professional" rebuilder. Drive the piss out of it!
