hello , i have a 49 fleetline that i 4 linked with a s10 rear end . i have searched all over here but i cant find the answer im looking for , how do i make the s10 drive line connect to the stock 3 speed on the tree transmision . low buck wise, do i have to use the spline from the original torque tube ?
like cut it and weld it to s 10 driveline. .. im lost on all this , its my first project. i want to run the stock trans with s10 drive line and rearend.

Like Moondog13 said, The S10 is open driveline, the '49 is a torque tube, 2 different animals. You'll need a later open driveline 3 speed out of a '55 or later car, get the driveshaft too.

actually, if you get the truck bellhousing T5s bolt RIGHT ONTO them! but only t5s up till 89.you will need to drill out the holes a little bigger, and grind a tiny bit off the front of the shaft, and get a new clutch(i think) other then that its good to go and it will eliminate the side shift garbage and give you better gearing.

  11. ive had stock torque tube to monte carlo rearend put together on 51 chevy truck the torque tube was cut down and had an end made with a bearing that spliced to monte carlo rear

You could also just get a 3 speed and hook up your original column shift, but honestly, if you're going through all this trouble just go T5 and your 216 will be much happier on the highway. :D

actually you know what. the early 50s chevy 1 ton and up trucks have a torque tube to open drive section that bolts in... in fact i have one laying here if you think it would work, someone want to chime in if it will?

    no.

    whats an adapter?

    no.

heres the easiest thing to do, i have done this 6 or 7 times. on 49-54 chevy cars and 48-54 chevy trucks......

find a CHEVY 3 speed tranny on ebay ( usually under 50 bucks) it bolts right in and all you have to do it have a driver shaft made.

the whole swap will take you less than an hour.

Just thinking, don't know if it would help but IIRC the 3/4 ton pickups had a 2 piece driveline that was closed on the front half and open on the back half. Maybe there is something there that would help.

The 1-ton trucks were/are open drive line. 53 and older 3/4-tons have a 2-piece drive line and the front half is torque-tube; the rear half after the center bearing is open.
As stated earlier with some creative machine work it can be done. Simplest thing now is to find a Chevy/Saginaw (SM-318) 3-speed and new drive shaft. You still have lots of options.
