Just tried to fire up the 30000 mile, no smoke, no knock motor i purchased locally, only to find that it SMOKES awful, KNOCKS awful and runs like ****. Problem is i'm nearing the final stages of this project and wanna get on the road. Can anyone suggest where to pick up a Chevy 292 reman somewhere on the east coast? I found a place in Washington but we're looking at approx 3-4 weeks. Just trying to find someplace closer. Any advice would be appreciated. Thought about getting the motor i have rebuilt but i don't have that expertise. thanks
A few years ago, Chevy had new Target or Goodwrench 292's straight from mexican production, like the 350's that many rodders have used. If it's still available, it would quite likely be cheaper than a rebuild. For best price, call one of the Chevy dealer engine/aftermarket suppliers who advertise in Chevy magazines.
Try to find a G.M reman that is set up to run propane, they have forged pistons that have a higher compression ratio. But will still run fine on pump gas.
I have a couple 292s - one of which is a GM "Target" motor. Its a Mexican unit - but I was thinking the Targets were rebuilt units. I guess they could just as well be new ("crate motors?). In any case, it would't hurt to check with a dealership. Not sure if the price would be lower than buying parts from PAW or the like, and having a local shop do the work, but you'd get some sort of guarantee - which could be well worth it. There are usually a few 292s (and parts for them) listed in the cl***ifieds at "Stovebolt.com" - a site for vintage Chevy truck folks. You might look there. Good luck.
I just bought one from the same company in washington state. I had it port and polished, balanced, cam upgrade, larger intake and exhaust valves hardened pushrods. whole thing came to 2200. Said they would have the motor done and shipped by next friday. I'm thinkin 3 weeks too. Thanks for all your help guys.
34Hup/Chevychopper - What's the name of the place in Washington state? Got an address or e-link you could share? Thanks -
I put a blower and injection on a Jasper reman 292 for a guy three years ago and he's still running the hell out of it. GeminiEFI
Hi-Performer engines. 800.942.7800 I talked to Bob out there he was very helpful. Told him it was going into a streetrod and it still carries a 7year 70000 warranty. I'd like to do the blower sometime but my playfunds are all but depleted.
