Technical Need Help Finding Choke Tube Insulation Material in Bulk

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Oldmics, Apr 12, 2017.

  1. I am looking for a bulk source for the insulation material that goes on carburator choke tubes.

The original material was asbestos and of course no longer availiable.

The only source I have been able to discover is a company called Engine Heat Protection
    http://www.engineheatprotection.com/index.html

The weave of the material from EHP is not quite what I want.
There are other venders of the material material (who I have yet to find) that offer this product.

I ask the power of the H.A.M.B. for assistance in sourcing this stuff.

ALSO - anybody know how the dark ends are accomplished ? This appears to be something that the material is dipped into to keep the ends from fraying.

Picture of desired material with blackened ends is below.

    Thanks for the assist.

also, your link to EHP is slightly messed up, you might want to edit the "e" off the end of the link. so it says.... .html

  4. And its a "HOME RUN" !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! for Squirrel.

Thanks Jim - You get an Abba 8 track for your efforts.

Now if I can just figure out what that black material is ??????

  5. I know Mc Master Carr has hi-temp material in different colors, keep digging! I used some on the plug wires when I ran them under my manifolds, when the donut went the sleeving was cooked. But above board on the intake it should hold up.

I'm thinking the ends may be lacquer dipped , I haven't seen any in years . Maybe look at this for ending and not fraying

Black Glyptal paint would give you the protection from fraying and could take the heat. But, the ends wouldn't be flexible. I like the look of the sample. They would really make my fabricated heat tubes look more finished. :)

  9. A wire wrap on the end might keep it from fraying.

  10. It could probably be folded under and touched with a soldering iron in a few spots to hold the fold in place.

I recall suppliers that sold the orange, woven-lined hose that we used to cover Aeroquip hoses on race cars. They had a pint-canned product they called "end dip" that they sold. Might try Earl's (most likely suspect).
