I picked up this 33 Chrysler that the frame wasnt done right for or never went to it to begin with. Its basically a GM front sub and the rear piece with a 10 bolt connected together with straight iron. I want to channel the body, but the frame doesnt follow the contours (see photos) Also it seems too long in the front, yet the steering box mounts at the very end (right on the tow bar which is leaving). The motor will be repositioned too, its too close to the firewall. The steering column hits the motor too. Like I said, I plan on channeling the body, and running fenderless. Will the GM front end look goofy like that, can I just cut the frame back and turn it in to follow the body contours? Or should I 86 the whole front end and go with a straight axle? The rear of the car seems to fit OK. I leaning towards chucking the front end. What would you do??
The frame seems too wide also...does anybody know the wheelbase for this car? The dimension of the firewall to inside of grill shell? Does it matter?
[ QUOTE ] Will the GM front end look goofy like that? [/ QUOTE ] Without a doubt. Those front ends need real big fenders to hide them. Check out thi site: The antidote You might be able to piecut the inside of the rails, near the b-pillar,and pinch them in. Since your not running fenders, you have some flexibility on the wheelbase.
DRR,gun it!I'd get rid of the whole thing and start fresh.Build yerself a new frame then you know whatcha got.The gm subframe is ugly in any fenderless car(imho) Theres no way you could "fix"that frame to channel the body without tonnes of work. If you start fresh it'll be less work then fixin that thing. If you've looked at the rear and its not too too bad you could always just clip the front of your car with some 2x3 and a dropped axle setup........Shiny
if you are going fenderless i would get ride of that front suspension...then channel it over a homebuilt frame with a dropped axle and cross spring. if you are gonna stay with fenders,i'd look for an original frame
if you still want to run a newer front clip with IFS, use a Chevrolet Chevette front clip. its smaller, less bulkly looking. my old autoshop teacher is gonna build a 27 ford t with a chevette front end and its gonna be powered by a 1200 cc motorcycle engine and 6 speed transmission. diego
Ok, So a little side step at the front clip will get the rails inside the body. Then you can channell it all you want. If you can do the channell you can do the frame work. The big question is "will it look Goofy" Well Hell, step back and look at it now. That part isn't going to change. If it looks Goofy to "You" then head down a different road. If You like, Drive it like You stole it. The Wizzard
make new rails out of rectangular tube and splice em in at the door line forward- then draw the horn pattern off an A frame and cut/ reshape the frontt- make a crossmember from a peice of square tubing and install a cross spring and a FORD beam axle with radius rods...........
I'd collect up all the suspension goodies that I like the best and build a frame to mount them. I like my cars low so Not a second thought about it! Sell the frame to somebody building a fat-fender car...I'd be tempted to build my new frame to follow the contours of the body [al la 32 ford] so I could chop the top and sink the floors down between the frame rails to give me a low seating position. Did I mention I like to be comfortable too?
Build a frame or swap to one that fits the style of the car. Also...IMHO Chevette front ends DON'T belong under a steel car. Not even a Chevette! GM ran a version under the Fierio,Fiero...Fire...that plastic thing(!) and it wasn't known to be a handler. NO adjustments for Camber and the upper A arm mounting is weak as shit. The crossmember isn't boxed and the rack attachment is iffy. JUNK. GARBAGE. Let them rust away in the "box" they came in! Bill
I think some Chryslers still had an axle in 33. Some people weren't ready to accept independant front ends back then and the factory offered them both ways. ie...remeber the cool bent tube axles that some mopars had back then? Come to think some people still aren't ready to accept the independants - like me.I just found a Chrysler I beam axle that has the same bends as the tube did. I'm planning to use it under my 33 Chevy coupe.
it look like you got a good deal becuse some one Fu ck it up It would be hard to even put fender's on it if you wonted to becues ofthe fornt steer, BUILD a new frame
