I have a 1953 Pontiac Cheiftain Deluxe with a straight 8 and a Hydromatic transmission. I need to rebuild the Carter WCD; however, the carb no longer has the I.D. plate. I've been all over the carb and there do not appear to be any identifiers. I know that there are a few guys/gals on the board running 53 Pontiacs with the automatic. I'd appreciate it if one of you would pull your air filter and check the number on your carb's I.D. plate and let me know that elusive little number. I probably already have the right number, I just need help seperating it from all the other numbers that are incorrect. I've done a ton of searches here on the HAMB as well as chasing my tail all over the internet and have found a whole lot of conflicting information (as well as a bunch of good unrelated information). Thanks in advance, Grant
i just wanted to reply in case there is a shot in hell this will help you. I have a 53 buick with a straight 8 and its a 3 speed. but i can copy my carb information for you if you think it may help at all, i would think they are similar if not the same, no? fyi, i have no idea what a WCD is, sorry, just trying to help.
I appreciate it, but I'm trying to find somebody with the same car (literally down to the tranny). Your Buick is a completely different animal (albiet a hip one). The WCD is just a model of Carter carb. I'm just trying to find out which version of the WCD I've got. I'm pretty sure that a WCD 719SA or a WCD 720SA would work and Wiki shows a WCD 2010S; however, I think that the 2010S is actually for the six cylinder Pontiac. Thanks again, Grant
WCD 2010s is for '53-54 6cyl all trans types WA-1 718s is for '49-50 6cyl Hydra-matics WA-1 717s is for '49-50 6cyl Synchro-mesh WCD 720s and 720sa is for all Hydra-matics 1949-53 8cyl WCD 719s and 719sa is for all Synchro-mesh 1949-53 8cyl WCD 2122s is for the '54 Hydra-matic 8cyl cars The difference between a 719s and a 720s is the 720s has an anti-rattle washer on the choke shaft They also used the 720s and 719s models on the '54 synchro-mesh 8 cylinder cars in '54. Early production models used the 719s and later in the model year they phased in the 720s Hope this helps!
Thanks, I appreciate it. I'm just now getting back to the carb issues. I've got it running (using an old motorcycle gas tank for gravity feed) after chasing down a plethora of electrical gremlins (the car hasn't run in a number of years). I've put in a new fuel pump, but it looks like the hard line is either clogged with old nasty crud from the tank, or the line has rusted on the inside, but it doesn't look bad inside the line. Either way, I'm putting new line in tomorrow (with a whole lot of inline fuel filters) and hopefully I'll be fighting with the brakes by tomorrow evening.
