History Need Help Identifing Vintage Midget Racer And Engine

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by deuce354, Jul 26, 2010.

  1. You say , no starter provision, can you tell if there is there a ring gear on the flywheel? If not, then it almost had to be crank start, a tractor or industrial unit. With seemingly correct tran's, that would point towards a tractor. Most any car past '27 or so had starters I think.

I took the liberty of sending a link to Methanol Mel Anthony, former Midget Racer,Vintage Racer, and Author. He posts regularly on the Yahoo Racing History site. Here is his reply :

"I studied the photos via HAMB site, and I cant be certain. However the engine looks a lot like either a Maxwell, Overland, or possibly a 1927 Chrysler four. In the early days before I began racing in 1946, our club used a varid****ortment of four cylinder engines, many that you mentioned in the post. Dont quote me on this selection, as it is purely a guess.

You are right, the little vintage car has a very good replica radiator shell of the famous Atlas Chrome Special big car. Your car should really be a keeper when you have it sorted out. "

This may point you in a new direction.

Hey Deek, tell Etter he "doesn't know beans about Race Cars" and go get a computer.

I just checked my Continental F134. Intake and exhaust on correct side but mine has distributor out center of head and water outlet to front.

I have seen a lot of midget races and cars but this one you have is really a great find. I can't ever remember a motor like the one you have but that was a long time ago.I wish I could help but in any event you have a treasure.

exwestracer-From an exPakid-Thanks for the link to the Plymouth pictures on the AllPar site. I don't know if you read the story with the pictures but if not you may be surprised to learn that the yellow Plymouth and the rest of the cars and engines in that story are mine. So as it happens I have allready seen the other side. And the inside. And the bottom. But it's the thought that counts so Thank you. RF

  12. Ha! Nope, just found the photo on Goog...nice stuff though! I'm a big Plymouth guy from way back, but a little "later" than those! I'm a native Cali boy myself, so how's that for a "twist"?

I once met a guy who told me he was part of my pit crew. Bit of a surprise as I didn't know him.
