Here's a newbie Question: How do I figure out what kind of GM 10 bolt rear end I bought? All I know is that it has a posi in it and it has mounts for a fourbar set up on the pumkin, what could it have come out of? I've been told different things,Camaro,C10,S10,Some type of mini van? I thought it was out of a camaro, but after all of these different inputs I've got I'm not so sure what it is?
    Thanx for any help!

well if it has 4-bar mnts on it it has to be from something w/coil springs

NOT an s-10, c-10 or early camero they all have leaf springs

g-body cars such as cutlass-regal monte carlo-gran prix- pre-87 will have a 10bolt that looks like your desribing, not many of these had posi's though
I have a 10bolt out of a 65 chevelle that has the 4 bar mnts, but no posi.....

    hope that helps some

    I've got the same question!
My myster rear end is coil sprung with control arm ears off the top of the pumpkin. The rear cover has a notch on each side, right in the middle. 10-bolt cover, but it has a companion flange instead of a u-joint.

Yours have a round cover? Regular u-joint mount?

full size caddy's into the 80's have the flange for a double cardan u-joint, they are an 8.5" ring gear, as opposed to 7.5" in most gm full size of that era. They also can have extreme highway gears in them, I have one with a 2.28.

one trick to tell the G body 7.5" 10 bolt is that the brake wheel cylinders are held on with a snap ring instead of bolts.

There is also a code stamped on top of the axle tube, you can look this up by using google or if it's a Chevy let me know I have the parts books with the listings up to 1975.

These had no upper control arms, but did have a panhard bar with one stud on the rearend to support it.

7.5" rear covers are kind of squarish. 8.5" covers are round, no "oil groove", and two small "ears" in the casting at the bottom on either side of the cover. 8.2" rears had an "oil groove" in the cover, but I *think* this cover will bolt on a 8.5" rear. 8.5" rears had larger ring gear bolts than 8.2", and they are left hand thread. All three could be 2.73 ratio.

If you can post a pic, we could narrow it down for you. With a companion flange, I am thinking that there is a good chance it is an 8.5", as big cars were the most common applications of this type yoke. Some B-body cars did have 7.5" (actually a lot of them in the 80s), but I do not know if they used a companion flange.

    Hope this helps! :)

wild guess.....73-77 midsize cars, which would be somewhere around 61 or so inches wide, and 71-up full size cars (except wagons), which will be wider.
