The block casting number is 3896944 and casting date is April 28th, 1967. What I can't find is information about the ID code. It's "V050IDA". I can't find ANY information on suffix "IDA". I can find "ID" and "DA", but no "IDA". ID and DA do not jive with any 283 - which this engine obviously is. Anyone heard of this suffix before?

    Engine ID code:

    0501 is May 1st.

The number 1 is stamped as the letter I just to confuse you. The suffix is DA.

btw the date code says it's a 67 engine, DA is a 1967 Chevelle 283 with manual transmission.

  4. My hollander shows DA as a '69, 307, 200 hp manual transmission with a 2 barrel carb.
..........and a 67 chevelle, 283. The date code firms up the correct ID.

    Ah ha - thanks guys.

I was confused by the DA. Everything I was finding said that was a '69 307. I never found any link to a '67 Chevelle.

It's not easy finding all the engine codes on the internet, because they're usually only posted by guys who are into one particular model (such as camaros, novas, vettes, etc). The oddballs like trucks and full size cars, and apparently chevelles, get neglected.

I look in the old Chevy parts books, they're pretty reliable. Kind of expensive and hard to find though.

That is the code and casting on my 1967 el camino 283. Did you post this on a corvette web site?

Just wondered type in the casting number and it came on a corvette web site with the same info.
