Just removed the rear end and torque tube assembly from my 50 Styleline, I am in the process of a V8 swap, not familiar with the mounting of these rears, it almost seems it is mounted so it can swivel so to speak with two horizontal bolts mounting it the spring brackets. Is that because of the torque tube? Can I mount the open drive set up the same way? Any advise would be very much appreciated, trying to get ready for the Stray Kat 500 ----- Thanks
Yes, the torque tube rear end has to be able to pivot as it travels up and down, and no, you can't use your open rear end that way. You can either weld up the pivot points (it's easiest with the torque tube still in there) or you can buy a kit that includes new perches and U-bolts. Chev' of the 40's used to sell the kit but I don't see it in the current catalog. Also, be aware that you'll need to offset (move rearward) the new rear end about 1 1/2" to center it in the wheel opening. There are kits to do this as well or you can build your own plate.
