I have a 55 Packard clipper 2dr with the electric torsion bar leveling system...How can i lower this????I asked the guys at the packard forum, nice guys but the are not into kustomizing these type cars.... so not really much help there Anyone have any ideas what can be done or know of anyone that did this????
You and me both.... The back is low but the front sits up a little high at least it has a rake to it,plus its dicontected so it cant raise up and down anymore so it kinda stays low in the back but i wish i could lower the front too.
Mercedes uses some sort of hydraulic leveling system to set ride height. My buddy the mechanic, lowered his by just changing the length of the link on the switch that controls the height. The switch is on the body, the other end of the link attatches to the suspension. If the switch goes one way,it raises the car,the other way lowers the car. The switch only senses the angle of the arm, changing the length of the link effectively fools the system. On yours, you would need to figure out how it senses ride height, and adjust it to suit.
I know nothing about that system, but if it's self leveling there has to be a switch attached to each corner of the suspension , such as a lever action switch, and if so, you may be able to manipulate their mounting points?
Thanks for the info, if im not mistaken mine has t-links that are in the front of the torison bars whats weird is the front controls the back too..right now have it disconected so i would think it would sit low but it doesnt. Actually only the rear sits low and the funny part is i stood on the rear bumper and it went right down stays down but the front went up almost like a seesaw, stand on the front bumper that goes down but the rear comes up,ITs nuts...thats why im asking for help here
Mopar didn't use torsion bars until '57. And thankfully they weren't a motor driven self leveling set up. One of the locals here has a Packard and he's lowered his by letting the tires go flat. I would think that there has to be a way of manually cranking them down but I haven't looked at MBL's to be sure.
In front you have to cut down the bars that connect torsion bars to the lover A-arms.You can take about 2" of them. And rear you have to make lovering blocs between rearaxle and lover arm.About 2 1/4" is good. That suspension is very strange, when rear goes down, front goes up. That thing was mine, few years back.
Thanks alot is that what you did???I will have to get under the car to see what your talking about because i didnt get a chance to crawl under it yet...But if thats what has to be done i guess i'll be doing it...
If I remember right get a bunch of buddies and have them sit on the front and the back at the same time, That should do it. But that was 40 years ago.
Yes,that is what I did.And be careful when you unload the suspension.Self leveling system should be in working condition, because when accelerate the rear goes down and front comes up.And stays that way until you brake. Then nose is down and rear up.Servicemanual is very helpful, when you work with the suspension.
Thanks Karsta.... ..I talked to a guy at the packard forum and he said he could make me custom T-Links to lower my car any length i want, sounds cool but i have to look to see what he meant...By the way your car looks AWESOME AS HELL...Is that a 56 bumper on it and do they fit with or without modifactions...Well i will try to get this beast lowered some how..Thanks again.....
