wanna run40 ford hubs to buick brake drums.I've been told that there not the best of choice ,but if you dont mined a little more machining and keep the stock bolt patten there ok. My question is how much of the raised bumps under the studs do i remove? Do i start my cut at the flat spot of the bump after the stud is removed?.Or do i remove the bumps alltogether. How thick sould the flange be? Any dimensions or pictures or information would be greatly appreciated.
'40 hubs have the wheel mounting flange in a different place than the 42-48 hubs. Mounting the drums on the inside like the later hubs will move the drums toward the backing plates too much. It will move the fins way past the backing plates. You need to do a drawing layout for yourself to find out how much.
Thanks for the info.measured them up and they definitly stick in to far. About 3/8".On the hunt for some later hubs.Gotta have Buick drums.
We used 40 hubs on a set 25 years ago. I think we cut a little off the flats under the stud heads, but not much. Probably had to open the drum center hole a bit too. It pushed the drum inward, so we cut some of the liner's outer edge off, and trimmed a bit from the edge of the backing plate as well. Still plenty of room for the stock Ford shoes though. If a guy can only find 40 hubs, and doesn't mind the extra maching, it can be done and looks fine. Has a deep look to it, but not too much. Plus, it helps keep your wheels inward if you have a full fendered car.
