Hey need some help mounting dummy lights on my 1954 belair hardtop. i've seen this done several times but when I was looking at the post to mount it on, I have no idea how to put the back of the nuts on the screws. Is there a trick to this?

Well, I don't have a Chevy but the dummies on my 54 Ford truck are mounted to the pillars the same as yours would be, and the spots that I got didn't come up with nuts and bolts to attach with, just some self tapping screws and rubber gaskets. So I just mounted mine with the screws provided. My truck gets driven regularly at highway speeds and the spots are still on there safe and sound. We just drilled the smallest pilots holes we could get away with to ensure a nice tight fit with the screws.
    Hope this helps

I forgot to add be prepared for the "dummy spots aren't traditional", "why don't you do it right and put real ones on there" and "why would you want to bolt a load of fake stuff to your car" brigade to chime in any time soon. They are a valid traditional accessory to a Kustom.
    Best of luck again
