    Hello,

Need some advice from you pros out there. I am working on a 1929 Ford Sedan. I am keeping the original 4 banger. This is my first time working on a Model A engine and these types of carbs. When I bought the car gas would come out the carb. This does not happen the whole time it is running. The engine runs fine. I was not sure why it would (I thought the float was messed up). I rebuilt the carb and gas will still flow out while we were starting it (not pouring out). I have many books on the subject, but nothing really goes into real detail to what causes or mentions it. Is my float off? Is this common with these old engines? I am almost finished with it and want to take it on the road, but I do not want a engine fire? I have put many hours into this and dont want to #@$% it up. I could use some real advise. Any suggestions? Compared to the other engines I have worked on this seems so simple. What am I missing?

    Thanks for your time.

    Marty

Well with that updraft carb starting/cranking with full choke sometimes you will get a little leakage out of the carb. Leakage shut off indicates a needle/seat problem. Those cars have a fuel shutoff on the tank, make a habit of using it specialy if parked inside.

I dont know much about them except to say John is right, every time you turn the engine off also turn the tank shut off tap off. I also have a battery isolation switch installed and turn that off as well.

I replaced my fuel shut off, float bowl valve, the punctured bowl and set the bowl at the right height, then the problem was cured.
I also had to clean the carb very careful, two times.
