Need Help on How To Identify a Ford 3rd Member

    I am trying to help a buddy's widow sell off his left over stuff, and found a 3rd member setting in a bucket in the corner of the garage. It appears to be a Ford 3rd member, as it says Ford on the gears. I think it is a 9 incher. I don't know how to tell what gear it is, or how much it is worth. Any help would be appreciated. After I get it identified, it is going up for sale. Anyone interested, send me a P.M.
    Found some more info. on inside gear case. On one gear it says C6AW-D, on another gear it says 66AW-4205B, then under that it says 4A31. It also says Ford usa then D2AW 4210 AX2 on one of the gears.

  2. the easiest way to find the gear ratio is to count the teeth on the pinion and the ring gears. on a 9 incher you must use a wrench on the two bottom nuts , a ratchet will not fit in. pictures would be helpful

    Some ring gears will have the tooth count stamped on the outer edge like this: 39:11... which would give you a 3.55 ratio when dividing the # of ring gear teeth by the # of pinion gear teeth.
    The relatively thin ring gear makes me think this is a fairly high geared pumpkin, (3.00 or lower numerically).
    8" pumpkins are more of an oval shape than the 9".

    Don't completely trust the numbers found stamped on the crown gear. I've seen them where the numbers were incorrect for the actual ratio the gears were. Not sure what Ford had going on with that...

    Count the crown gear teeth and divide by the number of teeth on the pinion, or mark the driveshaft yoke and the crown gear...spin the crown gear one complete turn while counting the revolutions of the driveshaft yoke.
    3 and a half turns = 3.50 to 1 ratio, 3 turns = 3 to 1 ratio...and so forth.

    I fully agree with Chop32 that its a high ratio gear set.
    Also, it isn't a "Posi"...Traction-Loc in Ford language, so it isn't worth a great deal of money.

    Non posi. Divide the number of teeth on the ring and pinion and divide the pinion number into the ring number.

    Would it be worth $75.00? If not how much? I'm going to try to sell it for her.

    You will need to know the spline count too. 75 is a decent price. I have sold for more and for less.

    Ok guys, I came up with 39 big teeth, and 13 small teeth. So if I understand your information right it is a 3.00 geared rearend. I think it is a 31 spline, because the number 31 shows up a couple of times inside the rearend. Thanks guys. I'll put it on the for sale page. I really appreciate your help.

    Hmmm...be a new one on me but who knows! :)
    Just look in the holes were the axles go and count the visible splines.

    Really nice of you to help out with selling off this stuff by the way.
