This is driving me insane. TooMany2count was cool enough to send me some brackets for my alternator for the 307, but it doesn't look like they work. He got me the top adjustment arm, and I'm pretty sure that works... but then the bracket I got for the exhast manifold doesn't seem to work at all when I bolted it all together... the alternator doesn't sit up right and leans back... and just looks really stupid. I believe the motor is a '68... there are no bolts in the heads anywhere for a mount, so I'm figuring it's either part connected to the intake and the waterpump. Anyone got a shot of their motor with the bracket? I've got a short waterpump. This is driving me crazy... it'd be at least easier if I knew what it was supposed to look like. I got a few lousy pictures from the net, and I see the alt on both sides of the motor...
short pump was stock & the alt was on the drivers side.... & kojack, i do have 2 other "J" brackets if ya want them & they are different then the one i sent ya, if ya want them shoot me your address again & I'll mail them to ya....joe
the only pass side alts i know of (on chevys) are from the early 70's (some late 60's) but they have to bolt to the head (bottom bolt). the ones on the drivers side had the bracket bolted to the exhaust manifold (looked like 2 "L" brackets welded on top of each other), the long curved bracket was flat (no bends in or out) was bolted to a stud in the water pump (the top bolt on drivers side had a stud with a nut molded in). the stud screwed in holding the water pump tight, the bracket was slipped over the end of the stud and another nut was used to hold the bracket tight. they make chrome versions (the lower bracket is made for headers they say but it's the same as stock). make sure you use a spacer on the rear of the alt in the lower bracket, because the opening in the bracket is larger then the alt boss. if you just tighten it over time you will break the rear arm/tab on the bracket.
Check out this link. Do any of the parts you have look like any of the ones shown there ?? http://store.wpsracing.com/cppalbrac.html
best investment... buy some rebuild books with lots of pictures. ive been running into stupid problems myself... only thing saving my**** is my library.
and kojack, does your intake have a breather tube with a threaded spot rite below it????? cause thats the way my intake was, unless someone change mine & it aint stock...............joe
Here is a shot at what I've got... something isn't off. Yeah, it seems to work and hold the alternator up, but there is NO adjustment room at all. It's stuck like that, so I couldn't even slide it over to tighten a blet. I tried moving it to the waterpump bolt... it fits better then the hole in the intake, but something isn't right.
damn, i'm trying to edit my post and people are still coming in (still at work and need to shut the doors). now i'm too late.........
Yeah, that's what i've got. I think the arm is alright... when I moved it like you said behind the alternator, and bolted it to the waterpump, it seems to be in the right spot. I think the issue is the bracket on the intake manifold... it just doesn't lean any more over towards the motor, so there isn't any adjusting. How you see it there is as far towards the motor as it goes. This is the last time I buy an incomplete motor. At least, when it's the first time working on it.
i still have your address, i'm sending you the other 2 & they are both different from the one adjustment bracket i gave ya & i hope i didnt grab the wrong one when i shipped them but i must of cause even though i had a 2 barrel intake the threaded boss is in the same place.. sorry about that, the other ones will be in the mail in the morning & i hope one of them is correct...joe
That picture helps a lot. Here's a suggestion to get it work with the parts you already have. Get some angle-iron and bolt it to the exhaust manifold, so it sits like this (looking from the front of the engine) ... ----- ......| ......| ......| Then bolt the bracket that is currently on the exhaust manifold to the top of the angle-iron. That should allow the alternator to swing closer to the engine, like it is in the photos that Hotrodsnguns posted. You can check if it's gonna help by leaving the adjusting arm attached, unbolting the alternator and moving the bracket around to it's new location. Or you can wait for the longer adjustment arm to arrive
i think i see the problem.... the bracket the goes on the exhaust manifold should bolt on the front of the manifold(bolts hole should point towards the front of the car)not on the side, if ya want the manifold, you can have it for the price of shipping it to you along w/I will throw in the other 2 adjustment brackets the problem w/hotrodsnguns set up is his is bolted to the head & the stuff i sent kojack is bolted to the intake & the exhaust manifold....joe
ok i just went out & pulled everything out i have & i think i know the REAL problem here, kojack you're trying to use a generator exhaust bracket on a altenator (like on the 265's & pre-altenater manifolds), wont work unless you refab it like Simonsez shows. like i said i will GIVE you the exhaust manifold along w/the brackets (if they are different) just for the shipping cost, but i believe what i sent ya will work IF you were using the correct drivers side exhaust manifold. &&&& i'll even do ya one better, just to be sure it will work i'll mock it up on Travis's 265 i have in my garage just to be damn sure that ya get the correct stuff.. how bout it does ya want it?????/..joe
I'm sending you some pics of how the brackets should look like cause i cant get them to post here, ya may want to post them so everyone can see them also.....joe
