Ok so I'm trying to get the car ready for the wedding on saturday so I thought I would put new plugs and wires on it while swapping to the large male terminal cap and from my stupidity I got two wires crossed and it back fired. Swapped back the old wires and cap and it backfired once more. Checked to see if it had jumped timming and does not appear to have. It kind of fired but didn't take off and run. Does anyone have any ideas? Flooded maybe? I'm going to go out before work and see if it will start. I think I may have cranked it too many times.

Yep, check the firing order. Make sure you have the direction of rotation correct.

Does it seem to be spinning faster than normal? If it has a lot of miles on it, the timing chain may have jumped- especially if it still has the plastic-toothed cam gear- most of the teeth may be in the pan
Or you may have just flooded it, if you were pumping the throttle while trying to start it

  8. Exactly.

I had been building GM motors for the local short track guys back in the '80s. Swapped engines in my "Ford" parts hauler and decided to replacecap rotor plug wires etc while I as at it. Wired it and fired it just like I would have done one of the shrt track motors only using the Ford firing order. It ran but just barley and popped and farted.

I was scratching my head when a friend came by and said which way does your dizzy turn. Then grinned. DOH

Your 390 dizzy turns counter clockwise.

Ok, so you should have it with 1,2,3,4 up the passenger side bank while 5,6,7,8 are on the drivers side bank front to back. That can throw guys who are used to GM or Mopar firing orders.

Check that you have #1 in the right hole. Bring #1 up on compression stroke, allign timing mark and pull dizzy cap. Rotor should be pointing at the #1 position. Good luck.

Yep, that's the next step,****uming you have the

    1. -firing order correct
    2. -the rotation correct
    3. -the numbering of the cylinders correct

You have to make sure you have number 1 in the right position on the cap and then check the timing as stated.

#1 is about at 1:00 looking at it from the front. It is spinning counterclockwise. If it flooded how long do I need to let it set?

Hold the gas pedal to the floor and let the engine turn over about 10 or 15 times. If the engine continues to back-fire through the carb then you have the cap wired in the wrong order or in the wrong position.

Since I have tried to get it running it has only backfired twice. It ran great before

  19. Missouri is a big state how far from me are ya?

Sounds ti me like you have a wire or two in thw wrong place. bring it up on TDC #1 and redoo it from scratch.

If you prop you carb open it will clear after flooded in a few minutes even if you leave it along the fuel will evaporate in half an hour or so.

You have an electronic dizzy right? When you switched caps you also switched rotors as well? You checked to make sure that the rotor is fazed right? These are just questions to help you think.

Got it running. For starters some idiot had a wire from like a old speaker or something to the points from the coil. It only had 2 tiny strands making the spark. And second it was so flooded that I had to put the old plugs in it and clean the new ones. Now it runs good.
