This is my Labor Day weekend project. I'm redoing all my brakes and cleaning everything up. I figured while I'm in here I'll lower my front and cut the springs 1/2 coil. This is where I'm stuck. I'm trying to remove the springs. I've removed the nuts from A and B, but the bolts are not budging. I've tried compressing and decompressing the springs. What am I doing wrong? Probably a lot. Thanks.
That looks a lot like my 55plymouth, If it is a isnt a nut-bolt type of deal. It's the adjuster for the alignment. Despite how everyone else does it. When changing springs without a spring compressor I usually take the lower control arm loose at the frame (where it bolts with the four bolts) and let the ball joint be the "Pivot". If you slide the jack under the bar, it gives you a better leverage point. Oh, you are going to have to remove that sway bar also.
Got it. Bolt B actually threads out, not taps out. Didn't need a coil compressor. This would be a lot easier without 1/2" of 60 year old hardened grease on everything.
Looks very similar to my 53 Dodge. That is how I removed my springs also. Make sure you get the seals back in when you thread that bolt back through the lower are and the upright. Also, if the springs are anything like mine, you probably won't even notice 1/2 a coil being cut out. I cut 3/4 out of mine and wish I'd taken twice as much, but with that being said, you can always take more, it's VERY difficult to put put it back on if you take too much. Good luck.
As big as a pain as it is to take in and out, I'd like to take a good guess on the amount of coil to cut. I'm dropping it 3". I guess I'll start with 3/4. Gallery http://vorhese.com/gallery/album265?page=1
I busted my *** and got it done this weekend. That was a quick weekend. I pretty much raced the ****ty weather every day (You have until about 3:30 PM in the afternoon before the wind, cold, and fog gets unbearable). I didnt even have time to bleed them before I was summoned back inside to spend some time with my fiance. My one real concern is the brake cylinder pistons were pretty corroded and not very smooth. I might try to get some new ones. I lowered the spring by one coil. It's definitely lower, but it could use some more. I'll wait incase it settles. Next weekend is the rear and 3" lowering blocks. Before / after. A little lower but not significant
How much did you cut off the spring and how did you do it? I see it reads one coil, did you just go around the top one and cut it at an angle? Any Pictures of that?
