Any Appleton gurus who can help me Id this spot? I bought two of these at a local swap the other day.
You got a very interesting spotlight there! The bucket looks similar to an early 30's Lorraine Mod 20 (however the oval Appleton badge shows that it was made by Appleton for Appleton spots, they made both brands) while the arm and handle looks like a later 1930's Appleton Series 112. The dark plastic was used at spotlights sold as aftermarket accessories manufactured to be sold as other brands than Appleton (Firestone, Studebaker, Cadillac etc). The small Appleton badge at the handle looks as it is placed up-side-down, not as it should be... The ribbed lens does not look like any other spotlight lens I've seen. I can not give any info about the model, but I would place it as a mid-30's spotlight. Congratulations to you for a nice find! (an odd thing is that I used to have an unidentified Appleton spotlight with a bucket like the ones on yours, but that spotlight had an earlier model of arm, manufactured in the early 1930's)
RPW, maybe you can help me to date these pair of Mobilite spots as well? Btw, as you can see by the pics I miss the handling knob for one of these so if any got one for sale just let me know. Thanks.
Sorry, my spotlight knowledge is limited to Appleton and Lorraine. The reason is that I'm collecting all kind of Appleton information for "future needs" in my magazine writing as well as a big personal interest in kustom history... I currently have a few Appleton's myself: a pair of 112's and pair of 552's as well as some spare parts and templates (nothing for sale).
Here is one I picked up several years ago at a flea market.Cleaned up pretty nicely but still don't have a lens or a mate.Price was right.
