i came across a set of these gears in my shop. the box says Nuera gear corporation. 1949-50 Hi Speed set ford Mercury . the set number on the box is #HR258. the input shaft is a # 253-16X which measures 8 1/2 long and the teeth count is 18 tooth. the input shaft is 1" OD 10 spline.

the cluster is stamped # 191-8X and measures 6 3/4 long with a center bore hole size of 1.125. the teeth count is 14T 18T 24T 26T. any help identifying the years these fit and if they are actually Zephyr performance gears would be greatly appreciated.

Those would be special Zephyrs; input is altered for later Ford spline and smaller bearing. Aftermarket adaptation of LZ set for wider market...there is full info on these in some circa 1956 issues of HRM and Car Craft by Don Francisco.

Just did a search on "191-8X" and this post came up.

I was tearing down another Ford tranny that was supposed to have Zephyr gears in it tonight, and I found this same 191-8X cluster gear inside of it along with what I believe to be the rest of the Zephyr gears. Although, I believe with this set up, a 26-24-18-14 cluster, that second gear on the main shaft is actually a Ford gear, not a Lincoln.

What was the application of this gear set?

Was it ever manufactured by Ford/Lincoln, or was it an aftermarket item?

    Thanks for your help.

    Mike

Realize this is a super old thread but I am planning to use this gearset now and was wondering if anyone knew anymore about it. Thanks. Mike

It’s strictly aftermarket. Ford never produced or offered those gears in anything they rolled out of the factory for the public. These sets were only made for the 1949-50 Ford passenger car transmissions. The gear design changed significantly for 1951 and none of that interchanges with the 49-50 gears.

Where the earlier 40-48 LZ gearsets did have a particular 2nd gear ratio, the 49-50 high speed sets like you have there were designed to use the stock 2nd gear.

    Thanks!
    Here is what I have:
Cluster gear is marked with the 191-8X. It is a 26-24-18-14.
Input gear has 18 teeth. It has a bearing surface OD of 1.57. The clutch spline diameter is 1.37. The gear diameter is 2.64. I think this is 40s Zephyr?
2nd gear is Ford 22 teeth.
