Need help. What Transmissions will fit a 1960 Cadillac with 390. I'm trying to find a trans but I just don't know what years will fit. Any help is appreciated.
    Thank You.

59,60,61, and possibly 62...not sure on that one.

I have a good trans from a 61. Send me a pm if you need it.

won't any buick, olds, pontiac, caddy belhousing patterned trans bolt up to that 390 caddy? i understand the differences in linkage, driveshaft, etc.

  5. No.

    These transmissions should fit:
    60-64 Cadillac
    60 Pontiac all
    61-64 Pontiac Bonneville only
    60 Olds all

1956-1964 used the dual coupling Hydra-matic, which was redesigned some in '60, the mid-56 through 59 version may be able to be used also (all Cadillac, Olds, Pontiac). Be aware there's a short bellhousing that has to be changed out if using an Olds or Pontiac trans.

Anything else requires an adapter, and it's possible some 1964s use a TH400 predecessor that might not swap over.

  6. Actually, most 64s use a Th400 that won't interchange. There is a factory adapter on the '64s with the hydro. I wouldn't count on a '63 or '64 Hydro being a bolt-in, either. After a major engine re-design, I'd suspect a difference in bell housing design.

I'm thinking I'd rebuild the original - what's wrong with the original, that won't be wrong with another 50 year old used tranny soon enough?

There is an adapter for Chevy trannies (so you can run a modern TH400, 700R4, or whatever), and while it isn't cheap, it's cheaper than fixing a dead Hydro.
