I have a 64 falcon sprint factory 4spd car that I purchased recently. I was informed that the car ran and drove. Well when I got it I was having problems starting it and the shifter kept getting stuck in reverse. After some research, I realized I needed a new flywheel ring gear and starter, then I found out that the engine block code said it's a 289 out of a 65 galaxie. The tag on the fourspeed said HEH-J ? and the tailshaft code is something like c4a7 ... Need a shifter/linkage combo, the one in the car keeps getting stuck in reverse, won't shift into 3rd or fourth, someone welded the rods, i just need something that will work or if you can point me in the right directions I'd appreciate the help.. here are some pictures of my situation
Go to the Hurst Shifters web site, there is enough info there to help you figure out which shifter you need (Competion Plus) and which kit you need to install it. Then go to the Jeg's or Summit web site and order it. Wait 3 or 4 days, open the box from the big brown truck, and follow the simple instructions exactly. IMO the only way to go.
This might help http://www.kevinstang.com/fordshift.htm http://www.dearbornclassics.com/62-64-falcon-shifter-assembly-w-o-arm-for-t-10.html and this http://jasons64falcon.com/projects/rebuilding-shifter/
You got a real good tans there. It a 1965 Galaxie, 390, close ratio, 28 spline. Go with the hurst. The right shifter for the trans would have been a long round handle with the reverse lockout.
