I am considering buying an older car and I have one big problem -- what is it worth? What would you pay for the following car? Pro built in 1996, Wescott '32 roadster with removable hardtop, built 1967 Corvette with 350 auto, TCI frame, Duvall windshield, Halibrand quick-change rear, discs in front, drums in back, Dan Fink grill insert, Halibrand kidney bean wheels (may be true knockoffs ), 31,000 miles. Car is in excellent codition with a few paint chips that have been touched up. Owner wanted $47,500, but has since dropped has asking price to $42,000. My feeling is that $42,000 still too high. So what is something like this worth? I was thinking something between $32,000 and $35,000. Opinions? Guesses?
Offer what you feel comfortable with ... But expect your offer to be turned down. If the car is like you say ... it would cost TWICE as much money to build as your offer. .
I'm not gonna argue with a guy named Deuce Roadster on the price of a deuce roadster, but paying about half of "what it wold cost to build" seems to be the going rate. Anyway, you have to start somewhere with the negotiating. Start with where you're comfortable and see what happens. But remember it isn't the only car out there for sale, and cash doesn't just talk right now, it talks LOUD. Good luck.
I have to agree with Belair, right now having the funds readily available for then and there or prompt payment is a huge negotiating factor. If you are able to write the check for the full amount then and there or if you already have the financing arranged so you can walk in and get the check to pay the man things may be in your favor. If you are trying to make the deal and get him to hold it while you go arrange financing things aren't going to go in your favor too well most of the time. You may get the car but will end up paying his price for it.
If hes already dropped the price its been for sale awhile,as already said cash talks and sellers nowadays need it more so make him an offer of what you"ll pay and if he turns you down keep looking.
Check out for sale ads on hot rod hot line and the auto trader to get an idea of what fiberglas cars are going for. Copy the ads, show the owner then make an offer. I sold my fiberglas '32 Coupe for $35K because that was the going rate at the time. I had MUCH more into it.
$32-35K is probably in the ballpark, but there are a lot of cars for sale out there. With the economy in the crapper, you could probably find one for the price you want to spend, just keep looking.
The car is well worth 42k. You could not build the 32 for parts alone let alone labor. If you don't like the price move on and find something in your price range. Why don't you go to one of your local hot rod shops ask the price of turn key car. WHAT KIND QUALITY DO YOU THINK YOU CAN BUILD FOR UNDER 35K.
