I'm rebuilding my SBC 383 stroker, NA, 9.5:1, street motor. I've read a lot of different info about ring gap......Some say bigger gap on second ring, some say the reverse, and there are different formulas. I'm using Sealed Power cheapie cast iron rings and here's what I've come up with: TOP .016"-.018" 2ND .020"-.022" OIL TOP .026" OIL BOTTOM .016" Whaddaya' think? Hope ya'll are enjoying the holidays, and thanx for any input you have.
Gaps are different for different pistons. Rule of them for carb motors is .004 per inch of bore, wider with blower or turbo. Hyper piston are usually wider..Lots of info on internet,ck with piston manufacture
I was always of the opinion that the top ring needed a bit more gap, due to it running hotter, but some manufacturers do recommend more on the second. Always go with manufacturer's specs.
I have never heard of gapping the third rings. Guess I have been doing it wrong for the last 40 years. Some of it depends on how close to the top of the piston the rings are. Hypertectic pistons are loaded with silicone and transfer heat better so at least the top ring and probably the second ring (actually the oil ring ,the bottom ring is a s****er )need to be gapped. If you grind on the expander ring ( third ring ) you will not change anything ,it only keeps the rails seperated. It does not rub on the cyl wall. On a oversize ring set ,or any that I have seen ,the third ring rails are not oversize. Now if you want to cut down drag ,the third ring can be replaced with one for a slightly smaller bore. But this may increase oil consumption so other mod's are needed ,but thats a whole nother explanation.
