My biased advice would be to chuck the mixing valve/hand piece for a Victor Jr. I like a 00 or 000 tip for fine stuff like soldering radiators. For most body panel work like hammer welding I use a #1. Your style and application will lead you to a size that you like best but gatting it in the sweet spot will take a little fiddling. Too cold of flame and it will pop and blow a hole and too much is hard to keep up. In general I like to run as hot as possible as you get less heat soak into the outer areas. I mostly weld with "baling wire", actually it is the cal-tie that is used for tieing rebar but you can buy mechanics wire. Some guys use coat hangers. Mild steel rod can also be bought in sticks for whatever diameter you like. I also keep some coated brazing rod around but just remember that where ever you usr it can not ever be welded over with any arc welder. It is great for build up tho.
And get at least a 4 or 6 rosebud for heating. I see alot of guys do it with the cutting torch but that is slow and takes too much gas compared to getting out Rosey and putting some serious heat to it. If I need to do any serious heating like straightening a frame, I get out my big Victor mixing valve/handset and use my #12 rosebud. I can heat a frame to cherry red in just seconds with that big mambo.
Also I like a set of whip hoses on the business end. Get good ones and they will be more flexible and not fighting you all the time.

I have an old Linde aircraft torch that I picked up at a swapmeet. I pick up small tips for it in yard sales and a local used machinery place. Love it!!

Do you have experience with gas welding/brazing? Joining chrome alloy with mild steel can be tricky. Not the best project to practice on.
