Customs Need help with which spring to remove from spring pack.

  1. Hello everyone,
Last year I crawled under my 1954 Chevrolet and noticed I had a broken leaf spring. Upon further inspection noitced the leaf spring bushings were mostly gone in the eyelets. I received a leaf spring pack from a 1954 car a friend had. I put it beside the original one and the arches were different. So what I did was pulled my springs apart and the friends springs apart, replacing the broken one on the passengerside and then matching up the driverside. Now both of my springs would be the same. I put new bushings in the eye let and put back together.

My car sits up an 1/2 to 1 inch higher now than it did when I started. I am thinking those bushings made a big difference. Car hits bumps much nicer now. However after 150 miles of driving car has not settled down anymore. The car was set up as a tail tragger. The stance is driving me mad. Car still has the 2 inch blocks in it that I installed 15 years ago.

If I remove the bottom, or second from bottom leaf, would this bring the back down?
I am open to suggestions as to which spring to pull or if another way is better to acheive the previous look.
    Thank you

I usually leave the one under the main leaf in and start removing from there. Sometimes there are 2 very close in size, that is the one I start with.

If the car rides so well, but sits high, why not remove the main leaves and reverse the arc, getting the right height and retaining the newly found nice ride?
    Old hat, but most sensible...
Instead of juggling leaves, compromising on what is now a 'good ride', do it once.

  4. Thank you oldolds. I will take a look at that. Didn't know to remove from the top or the bottome of the pack. Was hoping for bottom as I thought I could clamp the upper springs with some C clamps and remove the bottoms.

Thank you Atwater Mike. I was hoping for a single leaf removal to lower and losing little ride. Hoping for an easy fix, but that's not always an option. I like the sounds of retaining the newly found nice ride. Reversing the arc's makes sense.

Why not install a pair of 1 inch blocks and leave the springs alone.

  6. Thank you jcmarz. I was thinking taking the 2 inch blocks out and replacing with 3 inch blocks. I am open to that suggestion also.

My dad always said, there is more than one way to skin a cat.
