56 Buick portholes seem to work good on a flat hood........OLDBEET

I agree, all it needs is some scallops and a grill.

    I know!
Paint a stylized chrome bird hood ornament on it, with swept back wings like a jet...

    Wait, stop, don't do that.
That's what you just took off it to make it plain.
So leave it plain, clean, uncluttered.
it looks fine just the way it is.

How about a mural of three geeky guys with extreme acne, mohawks and nose rings chasing a naked mudget girl down the side of the car?
    Sorry....

I kinda like the '58 Biscayne side trim.
If you don't have it, maybe you can, I know you can with your tallent make some up out of aluminum or brass bar.

With some side trim on the car, the hood will look fine as is.

Take a 55-57 GMC hood bezel that holds the GMC letters and mold it into the front of the hood. Make your own tube grille to stick in there. For that gaping grille opening, use a 58 Buick grille, or human heads, whichever you prefer.

58 hoods look good shaved smooth with louvers and scallops - I've seen plenty of well-built ones...I'll try to find some pics.
