I've done a lot of searches for a grill to replace the bondo-ed in steel rod grill I have now. The shell was someone elses idea at sometime and it belongs to me now. I don't want to change the unique design of the shell I just want to update the grill. Any ideas? I'm pretty thick skinned so have at it!
HOLY BIRD BEEK BAT MAN !!!!!!!!! I know ya don't Wanna hear it .......... But ........... Thake the Whole thing Off, Smash it with a Tractor & replace it with a Nice '32 Shell & grill. *Note : Smashing it with a Tractor will make sure it Never gets on another car ! Sorry Man, Just my own Opinion ......
I have to agree with dirtbag13 about coloring the bondoed in steel rod bars of that grille. I think I'd try a silver or pale gray before using the chassis color though. De Soto also has a point as the grille shell has two. Your car is a hot rod with a custom nosepiece which doesn't really give it a cohesive design. The 32 shell or even a stock 28-29 shell might be a better way to go. Somebody out there will probably be very happy to had you a few bucks for that "custom" piece.
Comparing your avatar to that picture, it's a no brainer. The big bird grill needs to go...away....far...away. Great wall art but it takes away from the car. Yes everyone has a 32 grill and it's not neccessarily "original", but it works.
I think a original style 28-29 chrome ford grill would look nice. I type slow chaddilac beat me to it
Or fill it with drawer pulls and call it custom. It is a little much for me but drawer pulls would finish it off right.
Without seeing the rest of the car, I'd probably go away from the custom look and get a more hot rod style grill, like the 32, and perhaps fill it with some period SS tubes, or a bucket full of knobs, etc. if you still want a custom touch. Having said that, I've always had a problem coming to grips with a car that has just one part that seems a little out of place. In your case, I don't think the grille you have fits the look of the rest of the car and you should consider replacing it. Ducking into my fox hole, Gary
I have to agree with the rest here, 28-29 grill would be perfect on your ride. That grille sits way to high to add to the lines of the car. It would be better on one of those RR's where they sit a thought off the ground. The lower height would make it appear less intimidating.
Also agree with the 28-29 grill approach (& hang the darth vader helmet looking thing on the wall), sorry, my honest opinion.
I looked at a '28-28 grill with a stone guard and it won't fit the radiator with an electric fan on the front. OneKooKat1950 showed a 1937 Ford Truck Grill and shell.(Very cool look.) Anyone know a source that won't break the bank? I've gotta get rid of that beak.
Put a puller fan on the back side of the radiator and run a chromed 28-29 shell with no stone guard or keep your pusher fan and run a 32 shell - channeled down over the front crossmember a bit so it lines up with the cowl top better. Aftermarket 32 shells and inserts can be had on eBay for right around $450 shipped from gearheadworld. I've bought 3 from them with no issues.
After you change the grill shell do something about those hideous wheels and tires. Those are what poked me in the eyeball before the grill...
A set of bias-ply Firestone wide whites on 16" 40 Ford steelies painted the same gold as the frame would be killer on that car!
