More information could be had from the serial number stamped at the front of the block, ahead of the valley cover.

If I recall correctly, the head casting numbers are along the area of the head where the intake manifold bolts on.......just next to the valve cover.

I don’t remember where the block casting numbers are located. I am not at my shop today to look...I have a couple of these there. I could tell you by to,orrow if that will help.

I’m not sure that’s correct, did early 354 also not have water outlets on the front of the head. And my 51 331 block has the lower water outlets but the number on the block makes it a car block

The photos and text can be misleading as they were presented. Without careful reading, and interpretation, one could get the impression no 331’s had front of head water ports, but that is not the case. 1955 331 p***enger car heads most definitely had the head water ports and that was carried through on 354 (p***enger) and 392 engines.

As for the water ports in the front lower block area, according to my reference materials, those are present on ‘51/‘54 331 engine blocks for p***enger, truck and industrial.

    Gee, imagine that....internet info a tad off-base...

this number on the bell housing....323333291-D302-CWC
The first number is queer so you might have another look.
The D302 says it was cast April 30, 1952.
CWC is the name of the foundry.

If it has an extended bell on the block it's a 51-53 331. A casting date of 4-52 narrows it down.

My '53 331 has the lower water p***ages. They are covered by cast iron ears on the bottom of the timing cover/water pump front piece. Don't serve any purpose on the engine.
