    Hey,

If you're trying to hit either "***ian" or "Tahitain Red" from a paint code or a chip, at this late date in time, you're headed for some BIG trouble!
Colour choices picked from a photograph or a colourchip, for that matter ,are seldom if ever true to the nature of a colour. Photograph and some paintchip samples use dyes and inks, and not pigments/toners to "portray" the nature of a colour.
A sample taken from a vehicle with the actual colour you're after (usually from a glovebox door or door jam) will always yield the best match. Paint codes and/or names will, at best, only get you into the ballpark, colourwise.

The best maroon is 1990 Ford pick up, called cabarnet. Its one of the few that dont look brown.

I know that Chrysler color. Yeah, that's a pretty true shade if it's the solid version. Another overlooked "path" to the right color is the underbase color. I find that the best for maroons is black. A bright metallic blue likes white or silver for purity but in order to "dirty it up" to a traditional flavor red oxide base or sealer works pretty good. Also overlooked (I'm probably leaking one of my restoration secrets) is the base stock for many paints was a golden color when held to the light. Blues go green on off-angle views, reds go brown, whites are dirty, metallics have a look of some gold flakes.

One of the hardest choices, picking colors. This will mess with your heads a lil bit...picture a 2-tone grey on a 30's car with apple green wheels and blackwall tires. Sounds like hell, huh?

How about a light lavender shade of tan with charcoal fenders and a chrome yellow ch***is? That one came from Packard. Looks "right" in spite of the visual you may have.

    Great thread!
I'm an amature color geek. I love looking at colors on cars.
Some of the subtle colors on new cars are cool to look at, even thought I wouldn'nt put them on a traditional car. I had the opportunity to talk to Don Orosco right after they "arrived" at the final color the car was painted, very cool story that was summarized well in TRJ.
