The only thing that can create Patina is the passage of alot of time, the rest is just trendy BS.

  2. I don't see that much fake patina building going on. I know there's some, but of all the shows I went to last year I didn't see but a couple of cars that had things faked. I see a lot of cars assembled with old uncleaned parts, but I didn't get that they were trying to pass the cars as "found" that way. I still run across people who think the term "rat rod" is a brand new thing. I usually say that crap was 6 or 7 years ago, and was over 3 years ago. They usually say "Wow, really ? I thought them there rat rods was the new hot thing" . What I'm saying is, I've been hoping it's on it's death bed, I hope doing an article on it doesn't bring new interest or condone & perpetuate it ? Unless you end it by saying faking patina is gay. Now there's an idea...

On another note, just received Feb. 07 HRM, you guys are doing a great job at Hot Rod now. Opening HRM and seeing Tom McMullens roadster, McGee's roadster, the Graffiti Coupe, Doane Spencer roadster, Project X , Goldenrod, is fantastic even if they've been done. On the other hand, I've had it up to here with Poteet & his money and Troy Trep's stuff, why does every magazine feel the need to jerk their chain ? Hell, at any one time Poteet has several things being built at any well known shop that'll squeeze him & his money in, are the mags just going to follow him around featuring every little thing he does ? Why not cover some small shop builders who do better quality work ? Otherwise I look forward to the new HRM a ton now:), coming from a guy who used to just flip the pages, nothing looked too exciting & throw them on the stack, unread.;)

ps: Lose the peter pill ads, so I can let my daughter read it. It's starting to look like Hustler in the back.....

In the scope of your readers I think anything on your list would be acceptable, as long as it is done well.

Here... well, that's a different story. I think it only the top 3 would cut it. I think #4 would fly if it was done right. I don't think anyone here would frown upon the Rolling Bones stable of cars, for example.

The problem is the "if a little is good the a whole lot is better" mentality some street rodders have. Guys that patine entire trucks on every surface without concern of making it look correct... only old.

Anybody that would intentionally distress a well-painted street rod just to fit in with a certain style of cars needs to start taking his meds again.

"The painted chickenshit fiberglass roadster that was on R&C's cover a long time back pissed me off, not because of patina but because it was so obviously contrived."

You can blame me for that one. At the time, that 'glass A was cheap, hilarious fun and a huge hit everywhere it went. To me, the problem is that fake oldness is now being created by million-dollar rod shops. Frankly, I was hoping to hear more ranting about such things.

Imitation is the higest form of flattery, but imitation can also be plagiarism.

The faux-tina is a great form of flattery to the traditional hot rodding world. The rat rodding scene rose as a reactionary measure to the ultra-high dollar rods and kustoms being built (see funded) by the gold-chain element. Sort of ironic how they both got carried away, just towards opposite poles. But Faux-tina is actually the high dollar rodders way of saying, "I like what you do and I want to be/own a part of it". However, to find a survivor is to carry the torch that someone else lit. These Model As didn't roll off the assembly line like that, someone, maybe someone we know or don't know, spent many hours just as we do toiling over that car. The wounds are what give it character and authenticity, it has legitimate history. A new car with falsely weathered parts and painted on rust, as much as it is a nod of approval to the style we love so much, is nothing more than automotive plagiarism. And where I go, plagiarism isn't tolerated.

I've never tried to fake the look. I am guilty of doing a less that perfect job on restoring a part so that it could easily be identified as an original piece. Is that fake patina? I'll leave some deeper scratches in polished aluminum VCs instead of getting them perfect. I think of it as leaving the character in the piece.

If I was doing an old naturally patina-ed truck, I'd have to have an artist put a weathered logo on the door but to take a nice truck and weather it for no reason doesn't make sense to me either.

PS this aint new. 25 years ago we called them beaters.

Wow Tommy- that plate has PATINA!!!

Dave, I REALLY hate the ones with the overdone fake patina- the ones you see from a MILE AWAY with the "distressed" paint that can only remind me of the kits you would buy from Sears in the '70s to paint furniture to make it look old.

Real weathered patina is hard to fake. That fauxtina '37 is DUMB- fake a Dolly's chest and it's obvious from about the same distance.

I dont know what to think about it. IF I don't like something I just ignore it. To each his own you know. But if I had to sum it up in one sentence in the hopes of getting my quote published in a magazine I would say. "You can't polish a turd." Johnny Black

  15. Age and/or use makes patina. It's cool if it's for real... the ride as well as the patina. Faking it is just that. I guess I'd sum it up with history. Doesn't need to be some earth changing history either. Each piece and each car are a collection of history and the patina is like the certificate of authenticy.

That being said I wire brushed the patina off of my coupe and shot it with primer. Someday a LONG way away she'll be shiney.

Not so cool: the Fender custom shop's replica of Stevie Ray Vaughn's beat-to-hell, battle-scarred Stratocaster.

I think you oversimplify it. I sprayed my truck gloss black, in '03/'04, and the paint just went to hell. So it was a quick patina, but it was not intentional.

    Michael Bolton = Fake Patina
    Smokey Robinson = Real Patina

  22. Looking at a car with fake patina is like checking out a drag queen. As soon as you realize what your looking at, you feel a little creepy inside.

Patina is point of pride for people like me who are more concerned about 'go' than 'show'.

  28. I didn't actually, err, HE didn't actually FEEL anything, but after getting up close, and seeing an adams apple almost as big as the tits, it was very disturbing.
