  1. This thread is old enough to have it's own patina.

Faux is just a fancy way of saying fake....Real patina on a historical rod is very cool, but to build a car around it is just wrong....

    Wahhaha! We have a winner.

Fake patina really is like fake boobs. Except I like fake boobs. And small ones and floppy ones. Does this mean I like patina?

I know that this is an old thread, but I'd like to add to it anyway. When the previous owner bought the car I have now, (48 tudor sedan) about the first thing he must have done was give the mostly original paint a good scuffing, then filled some holes, and shot it with primer. Now if I had a choice, I would have left it alone. I don't have a choice now, so I'm going to "fake" patina. It doesn't matter to me that alot of you don't like it fake, it's my car. Unfortunatley, as much time as I seem to take to get anywhere with my stuff, some rich f$^%^kers come along and do it before me, now I look like I'm following a trend. ( well not so much in Kansas, we're a little behind in the "hot new trend department" ) Again, I don't really care, it's my car, and I still like the look.

I would like to see an issue on patina rods (RUST)...here is a picture of my 1931 Ford Roadster...She has a Chevy 350/350..the grill is from a 1935 Chevy truck cut down, most of her parts are from old parts, but she is soooo fun to drive. I have a sticker on her that states LOOK AND FEEL FREE TO TOUCH...Dan

Patina is just a fancy way of saying it's old. So fake patina is dumb. That would be like taking a hot chick with big boobs to get them replaced with old saggy ones.

  9. I find it amusing that grown men with busted knuckles and greasy fingernails use the word patina. Lifting my PBY, pinky finger extended...a toast to hod rods and their builders, patina or not.

The only reason my car has rust or "patina" is because I can't afford body work and a nice paint job. I love cars no matter what the condition, but to fake "patina" is just not right. If you want it that way, buy it that way. If you can afford a great paint job then make it cherry. Real rust is cheaper than paint.

patina is for antiques roadshow hey someone else beat me to it!
I think if you have an old car that has old paint and you munch the fender or something and dont want a new paint job fix the body and make the repair match the old stuff.
faking patina is for posers. its like "bling" ( how I hate the word) but its fake trying to be something it isnt people wear bling cuz they want to look rich and be "cool" people who fake patina want to look like they got a old hot rod to be "cool" I think a true hot rod is what it is it doesnt have fake anything no bullshit. a true hot rod isnt like those prostreet cars that wanna look fast to impress people but they are slower than homer simpson.
seeing a cool old hot rod then learning its faked age and wear and stuff make you feel like someons lied to you and you believed them like a joke everyone gets but you.

All of my past cars have had original, fading, chalky paint on them. I look for the best BODY when I look for a car; the mechanical stuff I can deal with, bodywork I cannot!

Let's put it this way: I put all of my money into the undercarriage/engine/drivetrain, and almost none into the body. I hit it with primer in spots if it looks like rust might gain a toe-hold, and leave it at that. Looking show-worthy is less important to me than, say, STOPPING. Nice shiny paint won't make your car handle any better, go faster, stop faster, etc.

All of my stuff is relatively straight, just not shiny. I prefer driving them, to having them sit around waiting on bodywork and paint.

I'll get around to painting a car one of these days. Maybe. If I can stand to let it sit for a while.

Besides, its kind of liberating when you can park the car in a parking lot and not agonize over it while you're inside. If someone door dings me, I'm still pissed about it, but I know that I still have time to fix it before paint!

Got this issue in the mail yesterday...............

"To get the flip side of the story on faux patina, we hit up the guys on the Hokey Ass Message Board, the Internet's bastion of traditional rod purists at www.jalopyjournal.com Here's what some of them had to say.

"Anybody who would intentionally distress a well-painted street rod just to fit in with a certain style of cars needs to start taking his meds again."--Thirdyfivepickup

"Looking at a car with fake patina is like checking out a drag queen. As soon as you realize what you're looking at, you feel a little creepy inside."--Tinbender

"A new car with falsely weathered parts and painted-on rust, as much as it is a nod of approval to the style we love so much, is nothing more than automotive plagiarism."--57 JoeFoMoPar

"Cool: Stevie Ray Vaughn's beat-to-hell, battle-scarred Stratocaster. Not so cool: the Fender custom shop's replica of Stevie Ray Vaughn's beat-to-hell, battle-scarred Stratocaster."--Mike Zenor

"I like, or did like the patina thing. Unfortunately, so do others to the point where it's been overdone/poorly done/copied/replicated, etc. Now the look is so abundant, it's not nearly the treat that it once was."--Groucho

"Damn it, Freiburger! Due to CC's and HRM's incessant paint-and-body issues, I've spent 30 years trying to eliminate this 'patina' that you speak of. Now you tell me I've wasted the best years of my life?"--Ramblur

"An old car is a statement. If you leave your car rusty and worn, you are telling the world you are indifferent to its standards. If you fake it, what kind of statement are you making?"--CaddyChris

    "Patina, the new billet."--Kickstarter

So, some of you are famous now.

i cant believe i never read this post, thats a lot of opinions to read. i have a old 40 with original paint, i love it but i would love to have a beautiful black paint job, my problem is i think i would not enjoy the car as much, if my daughter is out playing in the garage im not worried about how close she is to the car or if she touching it. no stress, i now guys with cars and all it takes is, opps damn. i dont want to have to worry about that and ive got a little boy on the way and i know he will be more of a terror than my daughter. dont get me wrong my girl knows how to respect a car, but how much can she enjoy her 40 chop chop if she cant touch it. so for now 40 chop chop will be a patina car but its real and i have built around that, when i rebuilt my motor i kept the patina of the old hot rod motor. oh ya i dont have to clean my white wallls either.

First off, I think most fake "barn find" paint jobs suck. If they're done correctly, they are interesting from an artistic, craftsmanship point of view.

Having said that, however, unless they were actually built before June 21st, 1964 (I just like that date), they're all fake. Fiberglass, steel, new paint, faux-patina, hot rod, custom, gasser, you name it - they're ALL reproductions of what would have / could have been done back then (I also dislike "back in the day" - geez, talk about cliches).

Bottom line, if you like it, do it, you're paying for it. If YOU think it sucks, go look at something else that pleases you. Why's everything gotta be analyzed to death ???

Fake patina is like a dildo, it'll please the owner but you're left standing there unsatisfied.
