A lot of you guys have built or seen a lot of cars built, so I am asking for input. I would like to install a gas tank in my hot rod that has a surrounding lip mount like a 65 Mustang or an early MGB. I just don't want to use hanger straps. What all car's gas tanks have the surrounding lip gas tank that you know of? I appreciate the help. I installed a tank from a MG midget and it is only 7 gallons so wanting to go larger. After I learn about other tanks then I can research and get the right size that will fit. Thanks a bunch.

Tank in my '54 Ranch Wagon didn't mount with straps. Bolted with tabs front and back.

Nope, same as Mustang which is too big.

  7. Perhaps you could provide dimensions of the space you have available? A photo would also be good.

Mustang tank is too big ? What dimensions work for you ? Mustang and Jeep tanks are 2 of the most available replacement fuel tanks.

This is a Jeep tank, which probably mounts on straps, but 15 gallon and taller / narrower than a mustang tank.

I used a VW tank from around mid 60s I think. Only about 10 or 12 gal. though. DSCN1176.JPG DSCN1182.JPG

I used a 48 to 52 pickup on my Deuce. Flat side against the back of the seat and it is only 9 inches wide. You might have to relocate the filler neck though. 48 to 52 pickup.jpg

Falcon and Mustang tanks are identical except for volume size, so either works well. The advantage of either is the flange that it bolts in with is at the top, so the entire tank hangs below the flange, not up into the trunk space. They're also cheap and plentiful from numerous sources found on the internet. They'll have a 70 ohm Ford sending unit, so you'll need a gauge for that resistance. Last one I bought was about 7 yrs. ago and it was $115 delivered to my door. Likely much more these days, but I'd expect around $150 with sender now.

  15. Used a 55 t bird tank in a 64 ford truck 33.5 x 23.5 x7.5 deep 17 gal . I drilled thru the flange and bolted it in .
