need reliable sbc tech in Huntington Beach

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by wideglide74, Sep 8, 2003.

  1. Looking for someone in the Huntington area to diagnos and repair my stock 64 chevy 283. I had someone tune and smog the car before driving it to Paso. It gives a little pop once in a while and generally does not run as good as it did before he ever touched it. I left the car in Huntington with a friend in June after Paso as I needed to return home and thought I'd fly down and drive the car home in the fall, fastforward 3 mos and now it's time to drive it home. My friend whom has the car is going to drive the car up and meet me at Billetproof but in the mean time I'd like to get it to a reputable sbc tech in Huntington or somewhere in the area and have it repaired. I want to get it to someone whom isn't going to soak me or make her run any worse. Thank you... Jason...

You have to smog it up in BC? I thought WE had the most draconian emissions laws...

Is it just popping a bit? What kind of carb you got on that? You may just need to richen the mixture a bit. My Ford did this when I threw the Edelbrock 4 BBL on it, you would go down the highway and out of nowhere it would POP then a few seconds later, POP, then it would be fine for a while then POP. After I richened the mix a bit it was fine. It would make sense that to pass emmissions they would have leaned it out.

Burn, I think Phoenix is worse than California, they make you do it for 67 and later vehicles here.

On the YBlock email list that I'm on, there was a guy a week ago that was looking to find how to help his 54 Ford pass emissions. I can't remember where he was, seems like Alabama or something, and he said they make you do it regardless, it has to pass with relatively the same emissions levels as when new. Alot of people argued whether information like that would have been documented in 1954. I don't know what happened or if it was true, but it sounds like one state might have it worse than all of us.

  5. My car is a 64 Impala wagon that's still runnin' the stock 283 2Bl with a powerglide. It still runs and drives just not like it did before the last guy smogged it, lets out a little pop out the carb once in a while. Would love to have it repaired before I partake on a 24 hour one way drive home. Thank You...

Does it sound anything like I described above? If so, I would be willing to bet that this smog tech just LEANED it out for the sniffer, he probably never drove it so he most likely never heard this sound you are describing.

The sound threw me for a loop for the longest time, Mine did it with the old distributor also, when I put in a new one with Pertronix it was fine, I think the old dizzy had a bad ground wire, so you may want to check that, too. When I put the 4 bbl on it started again, after 3 weeks of messing with the timing, I richened the mixture screws and it was fine.

  8. Defienetly a lean carb problem as it ran great before he changed the jets and leaned it out. I think I basically need someone to re-jet the carb, tune it and re adjust the timing. But since I am not with the car I'd like to send it someplace where I'm not going to get jerked around or have the car run worse. If you want it done right, better do it yourself is not applicable in this case.
