alright, trying to figure out what engine this 56 I just bought has in it. One of the guys at the shop told me where the number I needed was so I've got one number to go by, and they said it had power pack heads on it since there was a certain casting mark on the end of the heads. The number I pulled off it was T0406DE , the 6 looked like it could've beena lower case b though, but that didn't make much sense to me. Can someone help me out on this with such little information?
according to what i found it was made in tonawanda on april 6 and its either a '58 or '62 283 also it shows it could be a 68 307. do you have the number off the back of the block?
get both numbers off the back of the block, one will be the block casting number that's about 7 digits long, the other will be the casting date, something like D 2 7 or C 28 2 or something. Last digit of this sequence is the last digit of the year it was cast
Highboy_04 has it right. Here's a great website for SBC ID's: http://www.nastyz28.com/sbchevy/sblock.html You've only given the engine code stamping number, not the casting number, so you can look the stamping number up on this part of the site: http://www.nastyz28.com/spmenu.html
I don't have the car at my house shop, so i won't be able to get back to it until tomorrow. I'll see if i can get to the other numbers, where exactly are they located?
on top of the very rear of the block, what we'd call the bellhousing part of the block. Not easy to see when the engine is in the car! here's a link http://www.mortec.com/location.htm
great....don't think theres any way I'll be able to see it then. The dizzy is damn near right up against the firewall. I was looking at the website posted above, but i'm not gettin ghte "suffix" part of the engine engine code. How the hell do I know which link to click going by my engine code suffix? I might be over thinking it or I'm just a tard, but I don't get it at all. How did he get the displacement and year from teh code? that's what i want to look at. I need to know what I have so I can get the proper parts!
in the olden days they used one or two letters for the "suffix" engine code, there was lots of duplication using the same code for different engines in different years. Starting in 1970 they used 3 letters, so there were a lot more codes and you could pretty much nail what engine it is by the suffix. long story short, you probably have to get the block casting number and/or date code to figure out what you have. Although if the block does NOT have the draft tube/pcv hole at the back, then it's the 68 307 engine
If you haven't thought of this, you can put a piece of paper over the casting numbers and roll a socket or something over 'em...there's usually enough grime to transfer the numbers to the paper. Bryan
