Getting ready to apply our "shop logo" to our 28-9 model A sedan door. I think we may take it to the sign shop and have them put it on a vinyl "sticker". What size should it be? What I am asking is there a "formula" or "ratio" of logo to door that looks best - I know too small or too big is no good but is there a way I can figure out the correct aspect? They will ask me at the shop what size to make it and I need to figure out how to determine that?? Thanks-
Cut out several sizes of newspaper and tape them to your door until it doesn't look stupid. Look at it from close and a block away. That's the size you want. TZ
Hey Dan, If your going to a experienced sign shop or lettering/pinstriper, he/she will have the knowledge and perspective to be able to figure out what looks good. Whether it's painted or cut from vinyl. I would bring the truck or doors to them or see if they will make house calls. If your going to a "Quikie Signs in 15 minutes" type joint, Beware! It's really important to have a person who is a good designer and is sympathetic to what your trying to do. See if your shop of choice are into racing or hotrodding. It makes a difference. Good Luck!
Man, just find a pic. of something here on the HAMB that looks good and take that to them. Have them change the logo to what you want.
We already have the picture, that is not the problem, determining what size looks best is what I am trying to determine. I may bring the door in to them, that is a good idea as is trying different size cut-outs, Thanks for the suggestions
Dan, here is a pic I got outta Streetrodder. I always knew it was good for something. Looks pretty good this size...
Yeah - that is what I need - that looks pretty good that particular size. I just talked to the sign shop and they said 50-75 dollars per door depending on the size. Is that cheap or expensive or average?? I have no idea, never done this before. Wondering if I need to shop around or if that is about as good a deal I am gonna find. Thanks-
Dan - that is a about the going rate in N Fla. if that helps. The basic colors white and black should be the cheapest. If you want to get fancy you can have them do a "negative weed" (where the letters are removed and remaining is transfer taped) on a mask material then you apply to the door as a stencil and you can use lettering paint or even do a special "weathered effect" to give it false aging (thinned out paint?) Just remember which ever you do measure from the belt line or door bottom for your level line to follow the rake of the vehicle and dont make it level with the earth (bubble level) Clean the surface real clean free of dust or grit and do in a non windy area. Use a stiff bondo putty feather or preferably sign squeegee(sp) and work the air bubbles out when the transfer tape is still on as not to hurt the vinyl. After removing and a bubble still exists a tiny ***** with an exacto knife will fix that. When you remove the transfer tape from the lettering pull it back over itself and take your time so you dont lift/stretch any letters. Let see some pics when you get done.
Cool advise - we are still a couple of weeks away from doing it as some materials I ordered to prep the door didn't get ordered till yesterday, oh well, that will give me time to decide how to do the logo. Paint and brush is starting to look pretty attractive compared to $75 per door. We can always sand and repaint as needed as well where as a sticker we have to get a new one if something was damaged? Thanks-
Dan, $50 or $75 bucks a door is a good price for one color lettering or vinyl. Depends how much copy or if there's a pictorial to go with it. If ya want to paint it yourself or weather it, Dixiedog has a good idea. Just get the signshop to design and cut ya a vinyl mask and prepare it for application for you. Then just apply like Dix described and slop paint. Ya know, I'll do ya one better. Email me the info and a description of how ya want it and I'll design it and size it for your door. I'll save it as a Adobe Illustrato(TM) file and send the disk or email it to you. Then take it to the local guy for a mask or to cut it for vinyl lettering. I'll do it as "HAMB Helping Hand" gesture(TM) and you post it after the ride is completed. Verda!
Tried to send an email, let me know if it arrives. If not, maybe I'll just attach it here. This is a logo the kids in cl*** and I created about two years ago and have been kicking it around since. We are about ready to start body work on the sedan so I thought we should revisit the logo. It is nothing very creative or artistic but I think it gives you the "feel" of what we are going for. Thanks for the help! The logo also says "Miles City, MT" under Speed Shop but that file is not a jpeg or gif so I couldn't post it, but I think you get the idea. Thanks again-
Dan, What's your mailing addy? I might have a present for you.....just because you are a HAMBer and there are kids involved.
Man is this place cool!! Peterpan is the man!! Dude, you got my help when you need it on your new rod.
Hey Dan, I just responded to your email. I'm on the case and will have a couple layouts for ya by Thursday. I like what your doing and I love the speed shop name. This is gonna be great!
I think I PM'd all you guys, thanks for the generous offers, this is gonna be cool! I'll try and get pics of the process so everyone can see what we are doing - Thanks again!
