Trying to get my engine (327 sbc) ready to start for the first time with my three 2GC Rochesters. I was trying to decide whether I should use the vacuum advance or just lock it down and use the mechanical only. I have a stock SBC points type distributor, an Accel dual point distributor that uses Delco points, and a Mallory YL dual point distributor. I will be using one of these with my MSD 6a box. Any info appreciated.
Ross racing has told me that he uses the Mallory for that correct look and connects it to the MSD using the Mallory only as a trigger device. Is the YL strictly mechanical advance? Also, although you may already have planned this, I would fire that engine with only the center carb hooked up for break in.
I found that using an msd ready to run type distb. was the ticket. Used dual points, pertronix, etc. but it just never ran the way i thought it should. MSD unit is small also, like the old delco dual point type. I use vac. advance on it, manifold. Make absolutely sure there is no vac. leaks (end carbs always, unless the bases have been changed for non leakers), block off ends w/ stock center carb and run it/drive it-then put on one at a time and check it all again. Fuel pressure reg. set around 3.5 psi (i didn't have one for a long time, did flood every now and then) and it should be good to go. Good luck.
Another vote for the factory points. Adding the electronics just adds another unknown. Once the engine is broken in, and running smoothly, if you wish to go electronic, then go for it. Jon.
Are you running progressive linkage on the carburetors? Are the outer carbs set up properly so the ****erflies close completely? If so, the outer carbs don't even come into play until you get to the throttle setting where the progressive linkage starts to open them, so during start up don't worry about them (although you do need to watch to make sure the floats don't stick and they overflow.)
If idling on all 3 you should use a UniSyn. Not needed if ****er flies are closed and mixture screws in our not there. I agree with 2 blanks and getting every right on the center carb first. If not idling on all 3 you need to crack the outer 2 at least once a week to flow some fuel thru the needle and seats. The last SBC I had with 3-2’s used 348 carbs. I deliberately set the outer two carbs float levels slightly lower to keep the needle/seats tight not adding extra fuel to the bowls. The engine had a cam and shook more than a stocker. It just worked for me.
