Can Any One Tell Me If The Pumpkin ( Or 3rd Member ) From A 49 Buick Will Fit Into A 49 Chevy Housing And Are The Axel The Same Spline. I Have A 49 Chevy STD Shift With A 4:11 Pumpkin And At 60 MPH The Motor Is Turning 3200 RPM I Am In Need Of A Higher Ratio. What Will Work? I Have Been Told That Some Of The Older Chevy's Had A 323 Ratio But I Can Not Find Any Info As To What They Were In. Thank You For Any And All Of Your Help That You Can Steer Me In.
Yep, Powerglide car rearend is a direct bolt in, take it torque tube and all. Added bonus is the 51-54 has Bendix brakes instead of Huck.
I have a '40 Chev that originally had the 4.11 gears and when you were doing 70, the fan was turning so fast you almost could put the clutch in and pull it with the fan!! Seriously though, 3500rpm at 70 mph cruise is not a good idea for the long haul. I tried the 3.55 gears change as indicated earlier on this forum and that dropped the rpm down to the 3100 range...still not too good. I finally bit the bullet and installed a T-5 transmission out of a S-10 pickup which gave me the .73 to 1 overdrive along with a 84 Blazer rearend with 3.73 gears. What a difference...now I cruise along at 70 turning 2450 RPM and love it. There are adaptors available and if you are interested in going that route, email me and I will lead you to all the required suppliers. I hope you belong to the Inliners International...a good bunch of people who love inline engines.
